Title: Game malfunctions
Post by: CaptainLevi on April 24, 2013, 01:48:17
Some downloads don't function properly
Question: Why do some downloads work fine while other don't? "Stormy Weather" was downloaded but the screen was black except for the messages and controls. Other downloads say ""ship is sinking" when I just load the game and have not started to play. What is happening and how do I correct this issue?

My students say that the black screen with only ship controls can happen if the start ship is not present on your computer, or its files are corrupted. Try a free roam with that ship.
If it is missing and not a DLC that you don’t own and you are on STEAM, try clearing the cache. That may restore the ship files.

If you don't own any of the DLC ships, then the mission should not start at all.

Is there any chance you are multi tasking during loading, e.g. returning to desktop? Try reloading it again, or if you have STEAM and as Kathy's students say, try clearing the cache in the STEAM program.

New to this game, ... what is DLC? And, how do I clear the cache? I have been able to view all the other ships. Some of the other issues are that I reach a certain stage (go to the Antartic)and the game says to go to the new port but there are no coordinates or further directions. Thanks for the help and advice.

DLC - DownLoadable Content (small individual add-ons)

Examples: MS Oceana, Deniz Doga, Winner, Ferry pack, Sigita etc. are DLC vessels.

To verify Steam's game cache files, follow this link to their support page:

You verify the cache by logging onto STEAM and going to the LIBRARY.
Select the Ship Simulator tab.
Right click on it and select Properties from the list.
Click the LOCAL FILES tab and VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE.
Eventually you will get a messaged that some files could not be verified. They will be downloaded when you restart SSE.
