Title: MSC Flaminia ablaze and adrift in the north atlantic.
Post by: danny on July 15, 2012, 16:43:33
The MSC Flaminia is ablaze in the north Atlantic!
The incident occured some 1,000 miles between the UK and canada
The German registered container vessel, built in 2001 has been abandoned by her crew following a fire which has engulfed most of the ship. The fire is said to have started in No4 container hold.
24 of the ships company abandoned ship, with 4 sustaining injuries and 1 crewman missing.

The DS crown was the closest vessel to the MSC Flaminia, and has made best speed to the scene, rescuing all 24 survivors from the life rafts. 6 other merchant vessels have also honoured the call, but they are more than 6 hours away at this present moment in time. The MSC Stella also made best speed to the scene, taking the 4 injured personnel aboard. She then made haste to the azores, where a helicopter airlifted the injuried. 1 is in a "critical condition" and 1 has died from injuries sustained whilst fighting the fire.

There has been no word on salvage tugs/fire fighting vessels as of yet, however, there are rumours that several offshore salvage vessels are proceeding to the MSC Flaminia, to asses the damage and attempt salvage operations.

Will post more when I have it.

2 Fire-fighting tugs are now en-route to the MSC Flaminia - they are expected to arrive sometime tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon.
1 crewmember is still in intensive care, and 1 remains unaccounted for. The crew comprised five Germans, three Poles and 15 Philippine employees. 2 passengers were also aboard.

The missing sailor is Filipino and the dead crew-member is from Poland.

The DS crown is now proceeding to Falmouth, UK carrying 18 rescued crew, and 2 rescued passengers.

I have a feeling the words "constructive total loss" are going to be mentioned soon...

The STILL BURNING Flaminia has now been taken under tow by the Fairmount Expedition. They are proceeding to An un-disclosed location in Europe (although I think it will be the closest UK port).

The Anglian sovereign is travelling alongside the Flaminia, continuing with fire-fighting operations. The Carlo mango is "standing off" and will continue to maintain a stand-off position - acting as a safety vessel Until the Tow is complete.

Still Burning? Undisclosed? Sounds like something the government wants to keep secret... :P

I heard the fire started inside a container, and also raised the question if use of less flamable paint should include containers as its likely the cause of the fire spreading like it did.

The MSC Flaminia, and her gaggle of fire-fighting tugs has now anchored off the British coast whilst crews go through EVERY container aboard to make sure all the fires are out. Once all the fires have been extinguished, and every container has been made safe she will be granted access to a sheltered area so that further checks can be carried out. Then, and only then, will she be allowed to dock.

in what has proven to be a hot topic with the flamina, Several containers have been reported as "lost - overboard". This has caused some people to say these containers have been thrown overboard deliberatly, because of something they contained. However, it is more likely they were simply lost due to the vessels movements, or due to the fire.

Ditching a few containers which contains dangerous cargo in order to save the ship and the rest of the cargo is good seamansship. It's about the greater cause  :P

The MSC Flaminia has been declared "safe" to be towed to Germany. Her consort of tugs are expected to get underway sometime tomorrow.

On a interesting note, a Russian man has published the cargo manifest of the Flaminia online (here (http://www.odin.tc/2012/mscflaminiaen.asp)). It is worth nothing however, that the part he has published is only the list of "dangerous" containers aboard. He has not included the list of normal containers.
He has described the Flaminia as "a big chemical, toxic and miscellaneous dangerous substances floating bomb." Although, if I'm honest, most of the ships that sail on the ocean could be considered "a big chemical, toxic and miscellaneous dangerous substances floating bomb."

In the video you have "Bugsier 2" lashed alongside her just ahead of the "C" in M.S.C. Also you can see "Fairmount Sherpa"  (or her twin) in both the video & your photo above.
