Title: Basic Controller
Post by: captaintom on January 18, 2012, 21:00:30
Have just started using SS Extremes and am fascinated by the options available.
I find the keyboard a bit cumbersome to use. Can someone recommend a basic game
controller that I can use. Not looking to spend more than $50 - cheaper is better.
Will upgrade as I get more proficient.

Thanks. Capt tom

Hello,

Do you mean like a joystick??
Myself I use a logitech extreme 3d pro. I already have it a few years, and i'm still very pleased with it. It has many extra buttons, nice touch, and works great for SSE. Using it since the beginning, and I can understand that you're missing something with your keyboard.
You can find it for $34,99 at amazon

Hi captaintom
You should see two more joysticks from Saitek. The CYBORG F.L.Y 5 FLIGHT STICK, and AVIATOR. They have two levers for handling two engines. It is useful for twin engines ships.

Thanks, that's interesting. Probably will be my next step.
Immediate question is how do you handle a twin
engine ship via keyboard?

You could do it on two ways
I have set the both engines to my arrows(also my joystick ;D), that is just a setting in the keyboard list.
You could also use the engines seperate. For that you need 4 buttons. Two buttons for the left engine, and 2 for the right. You will have to find 4 keys you want to use, and are not used already for other things. I don't have that I just my mouse for seperate controlling. The only time I need it is with a two engine propeller ship to moor or unmoor.

I downloaded the keyboard commands. How do I now convert those
commands to my Logitech controller. Can't find anything on the Logitech site.

Thanks

I think I found the instructions in the Ship Sim manual.
I am going to try to work thru that process.

Will get back if I need help.

It appears that I do need help. I have the most recent program update for the Logitech (Extreme 3D Pro) joystick. I found the options section of the Ship Sim program. But making the connection between the joystick and that which is to be controlled eludes me.

Can anyone provide a simplified explanation of how to calibrate the joystick. In simple terms: I want it set up so that pushing forward on the joystick is forward gear and pulling back is reverse. Moving left turns left and moving right turns right. The paddle on the base of the controller I would like to be the throttle

Thanks for your help.

I used to use a 3D Pro in the game, if I recall correctly it also has a twisting handle. You could use that for steering. Then the left/right motion could be used for bowthruster (for example)
For setting the throttles, set the lever in the middle position, click on engine 1+2 increase throttle, and move lever forward. This is going forwards.
After that is set, move lever back to middle position, click on engine 1+2 decrease throttle, and move lever backwards. This is going reverse.
The joystick has plenty of other buttons to assign other functions to.  Good luck.. ;)
