Title: RADAR Distance indicator accuracy?
Post by: The Ferry Man on January 13, 2012, 21:00:31
Hi

I am sailing to Dunkerque, but the Radar seems inaccurate in distances

I have attached pics.

The first two Show my position as on the chart, as you can see I am rough;y just over halfway across the channel.

Now on the radar comes the issue

for a start two radar screens give me different results.

The 12nm Radar shows me at about 7.5 nautical miles off, the 6m radar has me at 3.8 miles off the coast.

So one must be wrong, the 7mile seems a more reasonable guess, but considering the channel is over 22miles wide, I cannot see me being that close still, 7.5 miles seems too close compared to the chart.

Have also attached a view out the bridge window

Hello TFM,

A rough triangulation indicates a distance just over 7 nautical miles on the picture of the chart, between the radar and land in the vicinity of Sangatte. Certainly, the 3.8 NM distance is wrong and your guess is correct.

Regards,
Luc

Forgot to add that the radar Lat long position gives the right distance of 7.5 NM.
