Hey All
OK so this is something different...
I started modelling this, but didn't like the model, the plans were not great, so I brought a book, which happened to have great plans, so here it is:

As you can see, still got some way to go...
I haven;t got a clue about the bogies and the area around the buffers - the plans are good... real good, just confusing with all the detail :doh:

its a Class 73 Electro-Diesel
has third-rail pick-up shoe and a diesel engine for when not on third rail track
The bogie... still working on it...
I have a load of picks, so I will just have to see how it goes...

Hmm... I think my Dad has some diagrams for the ED1 as they did an assesment on whether or not they could be used N of London for regional train formation for a proposed container terminal at Hornsey (or Bounds Green, I can't remember) that never got built.
It had detailed diagrams for the bogies as there was an issue on trackside clearance with them.- there was even a photo with one standing 20 yds from the Moorgate rat hole with a works train- I don't know if they ever tried to stick one down the sewer there but I suspect it would have ripped the roof from it.

Moorgate rat hole? that a underground section or something?
Not quite in my area, but I have seen them when I go to Portsmouth ;D

TFM, the Moorgate rat hole is the Drayton Park to Moorgate ex Underground line now used by worstrail (formerly the toothpaste line of Notwork Southeast.
I have walked that tunnel on a number of occasions (simulation of emergency/evacuation and terrorist attack). It runs under the Regents Canal... and I can tell you its a wee bit damp down there.
It is also the same station where the very contraversial Moorgate Underground disaster happened in 1975. There are all sorts of urban myths that the train was left in place and concreted in; there is also a lot of disputed regarding the outcome of the inquiry- one numbnut is insistent that it was suicide which, if you read the wikipedia link below it no doubt mentions the driver was rather excited about his daughters fortchoming wedding... hardly suicidal! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moorgate_tube_crash
Did you know that EDs were also often found on the KX crossrail and down to the Met?
I bet you've never seen an ED running along the Metropolitan. WEll here's a little tip for you- if you look at the throat of KX, on the east is York rd- there is a platform which is now used for stabling the Thunderbirds- formerly the line DOWN to the Met; on the West, just past P11 of the suburban platforms was the line FROM the Met. That's right- trains used to come from afar as Peterborough and run into the CENTRE of London.
Anyway, the point is that EDs came up that way from the South with freight and then went up the line or crossed over onto the North London and over as far as Old Oak to regain the Southern.
Pointless stories, but none the less interesting to those who like these sort of things.

What are the external differences between the ED1 and ED2?
I seem to remember (and this is stretching the grey matter) that there was quite a substantial difference electronically, but I can't recall any external differences.

Mainly cosmetic
They have a different style grill at one end and the pipes on the front are arranged differently (I haven't done that bit yet, just the general pipes) Also the panels of the bottom have rotating locks
