Fire onboard nordlys.
The cruiseship "nordlys" has reportedly suffered a fire in the engineroom, which has resulted in 2 engineers loosing there lives, along with 9 other crew members injured. Over two hundred passengers had to evacuate the ship. Police suspect an explosion may have triggered the incident

Every sailors nightmare. My thoughts go out to the family and friends of those who lost their lives and were injured.

Update:
The ship has reportedly reached 21.7 degrees. this is beyond the maxium 20 degrees that she was designed to take. however, she remains afloat and salvage teams have deployed pumps in the vessel. she is already responding to these pumps, with the list being reduced slowly.

The crew should be commended for there actions during this fire, they appear to have acted beyond the call of duty to ensure all passengers were evacuated in a calm but timely manner.
R.I.P to the 2 engineers that lost there lives.

Without negating the tragic loss of the two crewmen, I am very impressed with the way the company is handling this. Many companies do not act in an appropriate way afterwards, but Hurtigruten is doing everything to assist passengers in returning home- including assisting in passport and visa issues and providing emergency money to those who have had to leave posessions on the ship.
I for one will be putting this company on my list to travel with.
-
Yep, they have also provided accomodation for all the passengers and crew in a 4 star hotel!
My grandparents have sailed with this company before, they have great reports, and this only adds to that flawless image!

Good news that she is coming out of her list.. We don't want a repeat of the SS Normandie..
edit: I just read on teletekst that she has a hole in her hull that they are as yet unable to close..

Now down to 17 degrees.

Sorry to duplicate your comment.
The two crew were an 18 year old apprentice and a 57 year old experienced engineer. The above link has a link to a live stream at a news site. It seems that lots of people are drawing the same conclusion that the crew have acted very professionally to bring the ship, passengers and nearly all the crew to safety.
As awful as the loss of two crewmen is, it could have been a lot worse.

Even if they can "rescue" the ship wil it be a "wreck" it is filled whit saltwater everywhere bellow the sea level. and the ship was filled whit smoke. so i think this ship never will be a "hurgirute" again.

From what I hear the damage is mainly restricted to the machinery spaces, so providing the dutch do the job right she should be able to be re-fitted and sail again!
-
The Dutch have managed to pump millions of tonnes of seawater out of the Netherlands in land reclamation. If they can do that then I'm sure pumping a few pints of water out of a canoe won't stretch them too much
-
Well, I was able to find a live webcam of the ship so we can always keep an eye on her. :)

I think that she must withstand a list over more than 20 degrees due to rough weather when the ship is in normal conditions. But an engineroom flooded with seawater makes the situation worse by the free surface effect of the water which collects on one side of the ship. That will reduce the stability.
Very sad that an 18 year old apprentice died by this accident.

How Chilling. I have stood on that quay many times looking out at Sula but now all i will see is the memories of this horrific incident.

That webcam makes for interesting viewing. Whats even more interesting is the norfolk line container parked slap bang in the middle of the shot
I hope this ship is put back into service, as it would be a shame for her to be scrapped at a young age.

The decision on whether or not to refit will be down to engineers and insurance loss adjusters. Perhaps one could wait until after the funeral of the two crewmen before concerning oneself with the future of a big block of metal.
That said, I would agree with your sentiment.
