On the opening screen, it asks u to choose or create a profile. How do u do that?
I have tried clicking on that cross, but nufin happens?
???

Hello Pina .....,
You first have to click the 'Profile' icon at the bottom left of the screen (the one on the right of the 'Mission Editor' icon). Create a Profile for yourself first. The '+' is when you want to create a Profile for someone else who is also using SSE on your computer, so that the rankings are segregated.
Please also register the License Key of your copy of SSE in your Profile in this Forum.

There are no symbols/icons/buttons, just the blue bar?

Please open the attachment below. This is what the SSE home screen looks like.
Please post the Dxdiag of your computer. You will find instructions here:-

I get the blue bit, but not that black bit

Dxdiag as requested

One drawback of your PC is that the processor (CPU) clock speed is only 2.3 Ghz. If you see the System Requirements of SSE, it requires a CPU with a minimum clock speed of 3.0 Ghz. You can manage with 2.8 Ghz,. but anything below this does not suit SSE well. The OS and RAM are good. The graphics card also should be suitable. SSE makes quite some demands on the processor and the graphics card and you should have what is recommended.

Rather strange ! If so, how are you exiting SSE? You need to click on "Quit". Is there some chance that the screen resolution is improper that the 'black' parts of the home screen is not visible ?
Can you post a screenshot of the home screen ?
-
I exit via the windows button.
Screen shot.

Hi Pina ....,
Is this the screen you see soon after clicking on the SSE icon on the desktop ? If so, it is certainly not opening the proper way. What yours is showing is the screen one sees after clicking on the 'Profile' icon. The screen you ought to see at first is the one I posted as an attachment in my post above. BTW is your copy of SSE a DVD / download from www.shipsim.com OR a Steam version ?
One thing for sure - your computer's processor at 2.3 Ghz is not suitable for running SSE. This MAY BE one of the reasons as to why SSE is not opening normally on your PC.

From what I understand from my computer guy is that I run at loads more than 3ghz. He says;
'The 3ghz refers to a P4 which is 1 core with 2 threads. You have a 2.3ghz pure quad with 4 threads. Your quad has FSB and larger caches.'
Is that right?
-
I admit that sounds a bit "geeky" !! ;D
Try a reinstall. You first have to see that home screen I have been referring to. You can then attempt playing and see how the 2.3 Ghz processor performs.

I have a total of 4.6ghz split in to 2.
I have re-installed it and I get the same screen.

Hi pina,
I think you will find that SSE uses only one of the cores, i.e. 2.3GHz. This has been discussed at length on the forum in the past. Your computer guy, whilst trying to help, is probably not aware of the needs for SSE.
Traddles.

I have a total of 4.6ghz split in to 2.
Bottom line !! The processor of your computer has a clock speed of 2.3 Ghz. SSE requires a processor of mimimum 3.0 Ghz. And as Traddles has also indicated, SSE utilises only a single core !!
You could try installing SSE on a friend's computer which confirms to the System Requirements of SSE and see how it opens there. If you face the same problem again, you can contact Tech Support of shipsim.com .

I`m reading this discussion and I`m really surprised. In theory I`d have a computer very similar to the pinathecat computer: processor Q6600 Core 2 with 4 cores, at 2.4 Ghz. 8 Gb of RAM. Windows 7 Professional with 64 bit. Graphic card ATI Radeon HD 4850 with 1 Gb or video memory. And it runs very well with SSE.
I remember when I installed the Windows 7 the installer let the configuration as a one core processor, by deffault. When I noticed it I changed the boot parameters, in msconfig, and the computer started to use the 4 cores. And inmediately noticed a big improve in the performances. I use SSE full of graphics and runs really good.
Look at the antivirus configuration. The antivirus are source of many problems. By deffault the antivirus can be scanning every software you have in your computer; even the applications. Try to deactivate the antivirus for the applications.

Hi Tinchu,
You make a very important point.
Saying “SSE uses only one core†is misleading—and irresponsible if it leads someone to configure his system to use only one core.
While QuestViewer itself may use only one core, the oprating system can use the other cores for disk access, to run other processes in the background, and even to run SSE routines that are called by—and are external to—QuestViewer.
Running a multi-core processor to use only one core forces SSE to share that core with all of the many other processes that are running—such as indexing and, as you mentioned, virus scans.

Marty

@ Tinchu
My PC config is a lot simpler than yours, except that I have a Radeon HD 5670. The processor is an AMD Phenon II at 3.1 Ghz, 4 GB RAM (but only 3.2 GB is useable due a 32 bit OS) and Kaspersky Internet Security always running in the background. SSE runs pretty normally for me. I had to recently conduct a full reinstall (SSE DVD non Steam) and I had kept my fingers crossed right through and it turned out to be a perfect install and so did the Ferry Pack and Sigita. It is in some ways a mystery as to why even some high end rigs have problems running SSE smoothly. At the same time, it is good to know that your processor at 2.4 Ghz is supporting SSE well.
Pina's problem is unique in it's own way and possibly a one-off case where he cannot see the normal home screen like others. I also admit my error in saying that "SSE uses only one core" instead of "Quest Viewer uses ...... ". Marty has always emphasised this in many of his posts and I have linked them in many of my replies.

What should I do then?
I emailed Steam last Thursday, but have had no response from them.
