Title: mv Channel Freighter (Half-Sister of Channel Queen) Freight Ferry
Post by: The Ferry Man on August 05, 2011, 16:04:19
Hi

Had a thought that we don't have a freight ferry in SSE, so I thought it would be interesting to convert a "Half-Sister" of the Channel Queen into a Freight-Only version.

So thus we have... the mv Channel Freighter

A very nice model of the Channel Freighter. It is very reminiscent to the Landing Platform Docks of the Royal Dutch Navy. The Hr.Ms. Rotterdam L800 and the Hr.Ms. Johan de Witt L801.

Hr.Ms. Rotterdam L800:

Looks good TFM.

If it's freight only it would almost certainly not be double deck or double end loading, I would consider losing the bow door / cow catcher and the cat flap and replacing them with internal ramp between main and upper freight decks. Making her stern ramp only loading (didn't notice does she have a ramp or a door? a freight ferry would normally have a ramp)

Is she going to carry drivers as well or only drop trailers, accomodation looks about right for somewhere in the region of 100 drivers.

A freight only ferry wouldn't have 3 screws I would ditch either the centre or the 2 outer ones.

Bow rudders are evil, make it go away, it gives me cold sweats.

AH OK thanks for the tips :)

I was going for a general freighter like the Gardenia/European Seaway/Seafrance NPC/Cotentin - these are all double deck loaders

It was also fitted with doors (for Dover-Calais )

I will ditch the centre prop though, and see how I can change the bow from the current rudder

If that's in Sketchup then I'd say it's a pretty cool looking ferry there!

WOW, you learn something new every day, I didn't even know that there were freight only ferries running out of dover, maybe I should have looked out of the wiindow occasionally when I was down there!

@The Ferry Man:
I don't see any bulbouw bow on your nice ship. Why doesn't she has any bulbouw bow? She has bow rudders instead of a bulbous bow.

Well, there are ferries with both bow rudder and bulbous bow...the Scandlines MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN has for example.

Well she is the sister of the Channel Queen, who had a "Pride of Dover" Class Hull design (Triple Prop and Bow Rudder) As I thought this is a different type of vessel comp[are to what is currently in game :)

Ooh - that is interesting Bottman :)

I never knew that - found a picture of it on wikipedia

Intriguing...

Ferryman, it's maybe all dandy and shining, but don't you think that the bow doesn't provide enough buoyancy to carry the heavy accommodation?
You know, the designers of, say, Oleander were more sagacious in that.

To be honest she would probably have plenty of bouyancy forward, the weight of the accommodation isn't that bad compared to the machinery aft.

But what about that place for the rescue boat near the bow, I mean I never seen / don't remember seeing something like that on real ones.  The rescue zone is usually in the middle & all that...
