Title: Strange message poppup: search not found
Post by: Third Mate on April 08, 2011, 03:49:08
This is very very very weird, often out of nowhere this message pops up saying "Search not Found" .... it's like the computer is searching for something by itself but can't find it. I know the first thing that comes to my mind is virus, or malware but the funny thing is AGV has not picked up anything yet, anyone got a clue??

If it's the free version of AVG, don't expect 100% protection. I am told that Avast is better

It might be a malware. I use a good anti-malware software (free version) called Malwarebytes and it has cleared up a few malwares for me.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

(download the free version first, see if that helps)

havn't ever used AVG, but may it be that it's doing a virus scan and it's just saying that it didn't find anything? but in a short form... ::)

Hi Third Mate,

You should try out Malwarebytes, as Kevin recommended. It might be worth trying Superantispyware too (I use both on a regular basis):  http://www.superantispyware.com/

Run both in safe mode (Keep hitting F8 on startup, before the windows logo and such comes up).

Jack.

Before you all go running off with the idea that this is anything to do with antivirus, virus, malware etc, you might first of all want to check which program is reporting it, Third Mate. Nothing you said in your first post would lead me to assume that a virus was the case. But at this stage, there is not enough data to tell anyone anything.

The next time that the message pops up, press CTRL, ALT & DELETE simultaneously, then when select the Task Manager option. From there select the processes tab and make a list or take a screenshot of all the processes. Post that here and no doubt the answer will become more apparent.

I don't know of any viruses that are common at the moment that cause this dialog to pop up, but there are many genuine applications that can cause it.

It looks like the message stopped poping up so far, I have used Irishjack's suggestion and It had maximum effect  . I had this massive 17gb game downloading off steam and It took 3 day's, so I had to shutdown my firewall for 3 day's in order to download it. So I am guessing in those 3 day's something was sneaking in.I haven't gone to any websites that would bring these hidden things apart from facebook and shipsim forums. I could not believe my eyes about what two files were infected.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out.

That's why it is very important to keep firewall on at all times. Switching off your PC's firewall is like leaving your house door wide open for anyone to come in and do whatever they do as they please.  :o
