Title: Att: Ferry Pack on shipsim.com is not for STEAM version
Post by: bagsy31 on March 28, 2011, 18:41:29
Hoping someone can help. I've purchased the Ferry Pack today, but the installation fails with the message "unable to locate a valid Ship Simulator Extremes installation"

I do have a valid installation, but it's the Steam version.

Update: I see in the mailshot from Ship Sim about the Ferry Pack that STEAM will not be releasing their version until April 5th.

There is NO INDICATION on the Ship Sim site that the download version is incompatible with STEAM. I now have an extremely frustrated and angry son who has paid out 14.99 Euro for a product he has been desperate to play since it was first publicised, and now cannot use it.

It was stated on the website before, i don't know why they removed it  :-\

Perhaps you can contact Frank (http://80.95.161.114/shipsim/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=17444) or Swenson (http://80.95.161.114/shipsim/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=56831) from VSTEP. I'm pretty sure they understand the situation and perhaps there is a possiblity to arrange something.  :)

It was also clearly posted on the forum this morning early on at 9.40.AM.

I'm sorry you missed this but it is quite clear. Also the news letter sent out this morning at 9.45.AM gave the same apology.

If yours is a "Steam" version, you should get the pack ONLY through Steam. The download from www.shipsim.com is only for those who have either bought the SSE DVD or the SSE download version from the shipsim.com website.

Regarding the comments about the website notifying that the download won't work for Steam users, attached is a screenshot of the page that you buy it from - I can't see any mention of incompatibility with Steam versions.

My son had saved this link and downloaded when the 'purchase now' was added. Whilst I appreciate that the news section, and the mail shot had an update for Steam users, the purchase page did not.

I also checked the Steam store first, and as the ferry pack was not available I assumed getting it direct from the ShipSim website was the right thing to do.

I have done the same, and bought it this morning before I checked my email. But i contacted the support and they solved it so I will get my money back.

Krill87 - thanks for the update.

Did you contact support via the ShipSim contact us web form? I couldn't find any other contact details.

I sent an email to Frank suggesting they make it clearer on the purchase page.

Regards

The very first line on the purchase page states "April 5th on Steam" as shown above in the post by bagsy31. I do not know when this actually was included on the page.

Regards,
Angus.

Ahoy bagsy31,
I see that you did register your SS 08 licence number on the Forum
In the not so unthinkable case you'll ever need tech. support it would be a good idea  !:) to register your SS Extremes Licence key too.
Kind Regards

BTW, Welcome to the Forum  ;D

This was included yesterday morning. Everyone that has bought the pack from our website but run a Steam version can request a refund via info@shipsim.com. Please mention all possible details about the purchase.

Yes, you can't buy SSEFerry pack shipsim.com pages for steam SSE :).
http://www.shipsim.com/news/detail/item/28032011_134 (http://www.shipsim.com/news/detail/item/28032011_134) this page reads: STEAM has decided to change the release date to April 5th, so STEAM users will have to be a bit more patient before they can sail the Ferries. We apologize for any inconvenience their last minute decision may cause. Non-STEAM users can purchase the Ferry Pack from today on www.shipsim.com.

I have just done the same thing, bought the Ferry Pack for my 11 year old son, to find it is not compatible with his Steam version of SSE. I didn't see any warning of this on the website when I bought it. Have just asked for a refund as we wait for the Steam version to be released.

I do not see any point in steam version, all products cost more euro too and and keep buying its own website add-ons.

STEAM works well for many games, offering the advantage of automatic updates and the ability to download the game again from “the cloud”. This is in exchange for surrendering some control, by the customer, over the installation.

The way that technical support is handled for SSE is not as formalized as required for STEAM.
The two-tiered arrangement where some users go through STEAM, and some do not causes some support headaches.

Hello PoD,

If you have a Steam version of SSE, then you should download the Ferry Pack only from Steam !!!!!!!

It would have greatly helped if you had read the other posts in this thread.

bad.... grammar??? Ending sentences with prepositions....

I take it that if anyone purchases directly from vstep then it is totally sans-steam. God knows why vstep got involved with that system....

Don't get me wrong. I LIKE America and Americans... But their abuse of the English language really irritates me.

Damned train stations, colo(u)r, harbo(u), and like it so annoys me.

The correct name in English is "Railway Station". Train station is horrible.

Thank you, Angus. A gentleman of eloqution, wisdom and wit.

Saltydog- there's a lot of words that America likes to THINK it invented, but we British were using when the Pilgrim Fathers were still trying to decide which way is West.

Then of course you have Spanish and French influence on words. And- most controversially- many early settlers to the colony were poor and not overly educated and described everything in somewhat simplistic terms and given the lack of reading/writing skills of the time (all world, yes even Gt. Britain ;) ) many words were written phonetically- hence why so many words are without "u" for example.

But of course (before America throws cruise missiles at me (and misses and hits France) I must stress that I DO like America and I am sure that they've evolved greatly in the past 400 years.

I never misunderestimate them!  :P

(sorry for the O/T)

Hi Salty,
Nice one, but that song is all about pronunciation of words, not using wrong words. :-*

Before anyone starts to shout at me for going off topic, I apologise, but lets face it there isn't a lot of stuff on topic (i.e. Ship Simulator matters) nowadays, apart, that is, from the continuous "I want" topics.

There is a good reason for that- vstep are 100% totally hopeless in their understanding of ANY mass market.

If they don't watch it, their whole project is going to stall. Can't they see this?

Their business model is fundamentally flawed. Releasing a new game and abandoning it 2 years later is NOT a good way to keep interest alive. People get more of a thrill out of adding in regular, smaller content than re-releasing the same thing every so often.

That doesn't mean I am anti-vstep/ss- far from it. But I AM a realist!

If I remember correctly, in one of the video interviews before SSE was released Frank mentioned that VSTEP intend to extend the current game instead of create a new one every couple of years.

Found the video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAWFnHKIX98&feature=related - skip to 2:12.
