The photo from today in the Gothenburg Harbour :). She looked quite BIG in front of me :o! Stena Scandinavica is 175,5 meters long, 30,3 meters wide and 43 meters high ;).
Stena Scandinavica

What about thisfor a REAL ship? Taken Wednesday, 12th September, in the river Mersey off the Pier Head, Liverpool. She is the Dutch brig, "Mercedes" of Amsterdam.

Tack, längtar tillbaka till göteborg! De har gjort många fina längenheter där på hissingssidan, fast de är lite dyra för min smak, har blivit bortskämd här i "norr" :D ;)
Thank you for the photos! :)

Hello All,
This was taken this morning,September 21st. The "Queen Elizabeth 2" tied up and officially opening the new Pier Head cruise liner terminal, Liverpool. as can be seen it is a very wet and dull day, but I thought it worthwhile to show a historic occasion.
-
I was watching that on the local news this morning, historic indeed :)

Well Liverpool is certainly moving up in the world!
-
Hi Captain Davies,
Liverpool has ALWAYS been up in the shipping world!! It really was built on ships which did not carry talking cargo. ::) ;D

Did you take that picture yourself? If you did, it's a great shot :D
-
Yes, the photo is all my own work, taken from the Ferry car park at Seacombe, I got a bit wet as the rain was diabolical at the time, hence poor quality photo. ::)
-
Well, it's still a great shot ;D
The weather has been awful round here for the past few days to be honest (I live quite close to Liverpool). I guess the Summer is really over, but........did it EVER even start ??? ::)

Stena Germanica :). Stena Scandinavica and Stena Germanica looks so similar :S.

This is the beauty I've done my last seatime for my maritime study
(http://www.surferdude.nl/shipsim/Amsterdam.JPG)
It's the "ms Amsterdam" from the Holland America Line :)
-
Heres mine- I totally forgot about this subject till now! :D

yeah but i counted the days . the ship is in gothenburg one day and in kiel the other and counted the number of days and figured it out that the stena germanica must have been in Gothenburg that day so the boat on the picture is Stena germanica :)

This is one of the Ships I was working on during my cadetship, can't remember where I took the picture :-[

Seems to be a lot of people working on HAL ships. Half the guys i was at college with are now on various HAL. I stuck to tankers..the ports are not as intresting but at least the cargo goes where it's supposed to! ; :D
-
Yeah same here most of my class are with HAL, but I have since left and am now working for BP. Just seems to me as if cruise ships are magnets to newly qualified seamen :D..........And the perks are GREAT ;D
-
Yes I have heard that the perks are good ;)
Though promotion takes a long time! ;D
-
Some of mine...

More..

Greetings,
You talking about that more seaman want to work on a cruise-ship,than on others type's of vessels.
On the inland vessels,is it the same.I have spoken to many of my friends, who started to work on inland vessels.Afther a while,if you ask them to change, they would love to work on a passenger vessel(inland).
I think in this case,it has something to do with the work ondeck itself. Most of the time you are not allowed to paint something, when their are passengers onboard. So they only have to clean the vessel. Also what counts is the houres that you are free. When the ship visits a city, afther his houres of work,he also can go intown. On sandvessels and tankers, containers, you may not even think to go for a walk intown.
Offcource, what sometimes keeps them working on(by example) a tanker,is the money.Passengervessels dont pay so well, however compair this with the possebility to the freetime.

Marc,
It's not the free time. On a cruiseship you work (at least the holland america line) 7 day's a week. There is not much time left to go on shore. My experience is that people go to cruiseships is for the social life.
My experience is that I really like the engine room. Very big engine room and nice engineers. The bridge is also nice, but I think on cargo ships is better. I need to choose which direction I go after I have my marof's license. Makes it choose difficultly :)

Greeings,
I have spoken to some guy's,and they were allowed to go intown, offcource they have to do their job.
I dont know how long they wre allowed intown, maybe 2 houres.Atleast it's 2 houres that you can get of.
In this business, you have to work even on sunday's,i know.maybe thats why they could get of one and a while.I have never been working on passengervessels,so i have to belief those guy's.
I worked on sandbarges(inland)"beunschip".That was my choise, also i can imagine that you have to be clean(wearing some uniform)at all times.Thats one of the reasons i did not do this kind of work on the water.

-
Greetings all, well from my experience on cruise ships as 4th Engineer, if your not on watch you can go ashore but you just have to watch the beer :D, as for the social side of things cruise ships can be fun as there are so many people onboard. As someone has already mentioned i too prefer the cargo ships as an engineer anyway :D...
-
Greetings,
I've heard that, unless you have a title of Officer, you can socialise with passengers,if you are from the deck-crew,you are not allowed to do that.
I dont know for sure, thats why i ask it,never been on big cruise-vessels,not as a passenger or crew.
Dont know how the rules are onboard a vessel like that?
Marc
-
by the holland america line is are even the apprentice officers allowed to socialize with passengers and even hosting a table in the dining room. But maybe it's different with other companies
