Title: Plastic/Wood/Scratch build modellers topic (not 3D modelling)
Post by: VirtualSkipper on November 14, 2010, 16:05:06
Well, since I'm both a plastic and 3D modeller for a while I thought about starting a topic about it!

This topic can be used if you have just finished a model, if you are still working on it or when you have already finished a model(s)
Btw, bought replicas from a local store are not what this topic is about, it's about your own creation  :)

I will start first since I finished a model in only this weekend!  ;D

Nice work! Good topic! Did you have to paint your model of the Color Fantasy?

Yep, but what I do is first paint the parts and then start building the structure  ;)

But the manual is a bit unreliable so always take a look on the last page which is the page for the stickers AND the paint jobs  :)

I see, well nice paint job!! Looks great. Do you just look at the instructions to see what paint colors you need to buy?

Zuid-Holland but there also is a Revell dealer in Schoonhoven in the same province, I haven't been there for years but I bought my first models there.

What do you think the most popular model scale is? (If you wanted to make a fleet/harbour or something to that nature)

And how do you explain this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKXigrxeOjA&feature=related Interesting.

What's to explain? It's just a Radio-Controlled, 1:700 model!

The scale 1:50 is the most common one for RC vessels. You can put alot of details on it and you can still handle the size during transport and such  :)

It looks more like an air hockey table than water that it's sailing on, I mean.

Would it be 1:50 scale for non-rc also?

Hello,
For RC vessels you have many diferent scales.
It depends on how big the real ship is.
Some scales are: 1:20 , 1:35 , 1:50 , 1:75, 1:100, etc.
Here are some pictures of my build rc ships from a kit.
One in 1:50 and one in 1:35

Hello,
There are plenty RC Hobbyshops on the internet.
Try google with "modelbouwwinkel" or "rchobbyshops"
Thats where I got it from.

So, waht is the best super glue to use with plastic modelling? Paints? I know stores vary in countries, but what do you guys suggest to a "newer" modeller  :)

I use Humbrol and Revell units of 22ml each and a standard Revell modellers glue  :)

Awesome, so if you get a pack of paints like that you wont have to keep running back to the store for different colors etc right  :P
  Thanks for sharing.

Except for the colors used for the hull. Mostly black or white.
But those colors are also sold in larger containers about 100 ml

I'm sorry but I'm not quiet familiar with those glues and those paints. I don't like it to be so difficult on this so I would recommend you to use the ones I named in my post of what I use, but it's up to you to decide.

Well, I don't get my paints online, I ride 10 KM in total on my bike to get my paints  :P

But if I were you I would look for a paint or hobby shop and ask if they have got any modellers paint of Humbrol, Revell, Modelmaster, etc. My brands are Revell and Humbrol.

Only the hull, deck and deckhouse is made of wood. The details like the cranes, winches and railings are made of messing..  ;)

Well, yesterday I picked up some very very very very cheap models  :2thumbs:
One of them I couldnt actually make out if it was made to look like a shipwreck  ???
Everything was broken but Im restoring it slowly but surely.
I have reassembled the sails and stiched the bits on and glued snapped bits.
Just need to do other stuff, replace some wood, give it a lick of paint and it should be good to go!

And the other one well, that was in superb condition, only had to fix the anchor holder.
They arent that special but its rare to pick up any type of model at all!

A tip for Titanic modellers, here's a site which can be VERY usefull if you are building a Titanic.
The paint jobs look more specific then what stands in your manual.
I'm now even using it for my Titanic model!

Here's the site: http://titanic-model.com/paint/#misc

And here are some pics of my Titanic WIP:

Normaly the keel would be almost bright red (according to the manual).  :P
