Title: Want to know if you can run SSE? Online tool to check instantly here!
Post by: Matthew Brown on November 06, 2010, 12:22:59
When i first bought SSE I went to an online website which is brilliant.
It lists nearly every PC game, you select the game you want to buy and then it checks your computer to see if you can play it or not.

Unfortunately back then, they didn't have SSE on the list and I bought it none the less.
And it plays but very very very slowly!

But I'm very pleased to say SSE has now been added to the list!

If you go to:
http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/

Then select SSE from the drop down list, then click can you run it?
It is a very safe thing and very clever, it only analyzes your system hardware etc to see how well you can run it.
You will probably see a box appear to say continue or something like that from windows installer etc. Click yes.

And then right in front of your eyes will appear your results to whether you can play it or not.
I wish I had known beforehand!!

Here are my results:

So I thoroughly reccomend it  :2thumbs:
There is no spyware etc. Even the big company Intel has this gadget on their homepage  :2thumbs:

Kind Regards

Matthew.

One small problem Matthew, the recommended alternative graphic cards are BELOW the specs of mine which is a Nvidia 8600GTS. So not really too much help. There is also no mention of the power supply needed to run higher spec cards, which is of considerable importance. Nevertheless, a good useful tool.

I really wish I had found out this before hand

Well you could have just compared your dxdiag and the system requirements as well of course.   ;D

That site doesn't do much more than that I reckon. It's also still up to (when in the grey area, specs wise) the individual system aswell, how well it is maintained and kept updated with drivers and such.  :)

It also says you have enough video ram if you have enough ram to share, but that means you can get false positives aswell when a card is below specs but 'seems' to have enough memory.

But handy for sure, if you dont count the little things that are slightly off, yep.  :)

Could it be possible that Vstep publishes a list with the Optima System Requirements?
This tool tells me that my Minimal system requirement are up to the mark, but even with all options on minimal settings, I can't get more then 10 FPS . The FPS however don't decrease when I run the game with all options on maximum settings.

Hi Aad,

The time between consecutive frames is in two parts: The time required to render and display the frame is primarily determined by the capabilities of your graphics card and by the setting of the graphics options.

The second part is the time spent by your CPU in computing the positions and attitudes of every object that can move before the next frame can be rendered. This involves the dynamics calculations and AI autopilot and conflict resolution (not only the AI of ships, but of any little people wandering about the ships). This time is largely independent of your graphics options or the capabilities of your graphics card.

In your case, the latter time period dominates. In considering the capability of the graphics card vs the speed of the CPU & memory, one is up against the Anna Karenina Principal.

Marty

This may not work for everybody ....... like it didn't for me !!

The application did not recognise my Gfx card, which is well above the minimum requirements of SSE.

Please see attached screenshot which is self explanatory.

Well 0.02% of the time it may not be right
But it's still handy for anyone who wishes to purchase the game.

yes it certainly is!
thanks, :2thumbs:

but one thing though,
my comp crashed when i used that website
i think it depends on my windows 7 as not all the service
packs are installed propally

but i will re-do and try again

Hmm, it doesn't recognise my i7 640UM properly - it only sees 1 core running at 1.20GHz but not the other 3 cores  ???

Also it says my 2D card on my laptop (Intel HD Graphics) can run the game which it can't. I do also have a GeForce GT335M which can, it must be at some stage running DxDiag to pick up these details. Could this be what happened to you Vin_Sun?

Nice plugin but it needs work to be accurate :)

Hi Vige,

You could be right about this. I ran a Dxdiag on my machine and true enough it identifies only the series of the gfx card and NOT the actual card installed. Please see the attached clipping.

Uh that tool is USELESS..

It says i have a 3ghz cpu rated at 9.967ghz.. when in actuality its only overclocked to 3.67ghz... i wish it was 9 tho. I have 2 470 cards and it totals 2.5g of vram yet shows up at 4g... again its wrong.

i wouldn't trust its results entirely.

We already said that mate

Sometimes it works for some people, sometimes it doesn't.
Just depends on your system!

It is very HELPFUL for me in particular as it got everything right

If you want, you can try and find another tool the same which might be better for you!  :)

I don't need a tool. I can simply read the requirements and make my own assessment if my system can handel the program.

Gentlemen,

I think “unreliable” is a better choice than “useless”. Not only is the data not always correct, but meeting the minimum requirements as stated will not guarantee that your system will handle SSE adequately.
Some high-end systems that should give good results don’t. This is mainly because of flaws in the way SSE manages memory. Some of that will be corrected in 1.3, but not all.

A more useful way to test if your system might handle SSE is to download the free SSE Demo.

Users with 64-bit systems that have at least 4 GB of RAM should follow Sean’s suggestion to improve the performance in SSE:

My PC can run the demo fine with the settings turned down slightly, so will it manage the full version?

Ahoy rich84
I'm almost sure. The Demo-version is in fact the complete sim, except their is just one (or two) mission(s) and just one vessel available.
Go for it, Rich.
Happy sailing and best regards

The demo will tell you if your system can’t handle SSE. However, system demands vary a lot with different missions—the complexity of the environment, the number of AI ships, etc.
Also, things have been added since the demo was released that will increase the demands on the system.
Still, the demo is the best test of whether your system has any chance of running SSE.

This site mentioned above doesn't know very much about SSE.

It states that my computer is able to run the game FAST (!!!), but in fact the game runs at between 8 (inside harbour environments) and max. 13 fps (at the ocean at low quality settings inside the game and of the video drivers). And this is when I'm lucky! Sometimes the game doesn't even start, or the ship or the controls are missing, or the ship and the controls are there, but the ship doesn't move etc.

When I think about that I upgraded my computer based on the stated system requirements, I start to ask myself, how the game was tested before the release date.

At the moment I've given up and play SS08 and SS06 instead.
Still waiting for patch 1.3 and hope that id doesn't only deliver AI traffic, but first of all - as I'm happy whith the look and the vessel's dynamics - performance!
