Seems a bit strange that a topic is locked, rather than giving the perp a warning or temporary ban.. :)
Title: Re: sorry for the story
Post by: oceandream on October 16, 2010, 20:55:55
Guys not too sound rude but...
Just locking the topic and saying you disobayed a rule is not gonna help..
Give a warning, then if it happpens again, then you lock a topic.

Ok??

Regards

I forgive you too.  :)
It was a bit hastly closed rather quickly though that topic like some one else said.

And freeciv, are you sure that's the right Dublin  ???
It seems rather small, only there is a much larger Dublin in California on the west coast.
I'm not American but that's what I have always believed!

1. Fred over reacted. he shouldn't have locked the topic just because of one person. He could have sent a PM to Craig or given him a temporary ban.

2. I'm not sure if thats the only Dublin. I just googled "Dublin in america".  :P

Exactly!
You googled "Dublin in America"
Because you put the 'in', it automatically said Indiana
Well there you go lars, there are two towns called Dublin!
I'm suprised one isn't called New Dublin and the other New New Dublin  ::)

Dublin, Alameda, CA
Dublin, Pulaski, VA
Dublin, Lake, FL
Dublin, Logan, AR
Dublin, Bladen, NC
Dublin, Cheshire, NH   (home state ;D )
Dublin, Harford, MD

It wasn't just craig.

A bunch of members started to post more and more off topic content in serious topics aswell. Every time we have some nice friendly forum game, some have to take it too far and venture in what can only be described as 'post boosting' and turning the forum into some kind of private playground.

It seems that every time we allow a more free approach in some part of the forum, that posting attitude also projects onto the other boards. And if someone has to be reminded three times or more, and still doesn't listen, then a line is drawn and then it's just game over, for such a topic. This is not some chatbox here, there are other sites for this purpose.

If everone had played the game as intented, it would have been a lot better, but too many nonesensical posts came up, where people would just post remarks of a few words, not proper sentences as intended.. And I heard that some are actually having a race to see who can rack up the most posts in the least ammount of time.

That's not what the forum is about, I am afraid. If some of you can't keep the irrelevant posts in the topics meant for it, and feels they must post off topic remarks in the same fashion that they do in these fun topics, then it's making a mess, and we step in. If that's what these games lead to, then maybe we shoul not have them. This is an official forum of a company, not some fan forum where anything goes. A lot of unsuited and nonesensical posts were already taken out from that topic during it's run, and it was being watched already. Craig just gave it a final push. If we can't keep it tidy amongst each other, then it's time for a reminder. Easy as that.

Fred.

Fred

as i have seen in other forums couldn't you remove the post count when you post in such topics as the story or cookiebox? or even possibly have to make it the whole of the small talk, although that last one is a bit to extreame.

you could do this by making a option when you make a new topic and there is a tick box you could check or not for post count to be included, if someone include's post count and people are clearly post boosting then a moderator could untick it and it would stay that way and not be able to change.

Is this possible?

Ralphy

Yes, but only if it would be the whole of the area that the topics are in, not a single topic.

That would mean the whole small talk area would have to be like that. That seems a bit drastic.  :-\

how about a sub-forum within the small talk for games

Yes, I definatly agree too. I confess I can get a little post-happy sometimes also, and forget about quality, not quantity

Sure, there's no problem with a bit of fun.

But the way that such topics normally work, wasn't the way it was done here, anymore.

With people not putting in proper sentences, but halfbaked replies for quick posting. Just going 'and then he...'  is not a proper sentence for such a game, for example. And not waiting one's turn, or double and tripple posting isn't the correct format either.

Ralphy, I don't think small talk warrants yet another 'smaller talk' subforum for games. But we'll think about it.  ;D

Your absolutely right!
It was fun until people started posting silly incomplete sentences.

It's been almost 3 days with out a story.  :'(

Just like Ship Simulator Extremes, possibly we could come out with a Small Talk Extremes  :2thumbs:
But If a smaller-talk subforum was present, I think that the more useless posts would be less around the other parts of the forum.

Alternatively, people could also try to endeavour to make less useless posts.  ;)

No matter how hard you try there will always be some idiot who posts stupid posts for the sake of posting stupidly.

This is very true also

Yeah, we will just have to ignore that person, and a Moderator or Administrator will deal with them  :)

If i'm honest, half of the reason why I don't stick around much anymore is because there isn't much decent to talk about. At one time you could go into the story topic, have a laugh, then go discuss something in a decent topic related to Shipping or whatever....

To put it simply...this forum isn't the same as when I first registered.

That is easy to fix... don't display post counts for members! Post counts will always been seen as a status symbol by some people. I always have to wonder about people that have only been on a board for a few weeks/months and have already racked up a few thousand posts.

I totally agree with Jack...before there were topics about having full MP servers and topics about ships and even the story when it started, it was related to boats/ships... I don't like to point fingers but I feel that once stu and wave came in things just got silly, thats what the new members saw so thats how things evolved  :-\
