As they say in fancy restaurants, (where no prices are listed on the menu) :
"If you need to ask, you can't afford it"..  ;)

I've talked to some manufacturers at the last shipbuilding fair in Hamburg two weeks ago. Just one of those professional sterring devices is more expensive, than the whole WILCO unit is. As you can see at the screenshots, it is targeted to the NAUTIS system.

You have also been on SMM Bottman ::) but they had some really nice steering units ;D
Maybe this website helps you www.storkfriesland.com (http://www.storkfriesland.com) the RSCU-Mk3 unit costs about 1500€ each just as a tip.

That's pretty expensive just for a hobby but ofcourse you don't need a brand new one. If you have some contacts, you might can get your hands on a used one that's been replaced. I assume you have to rip the electronics out, to fit your own equipment in to connect it to your computer  :)

Guess those things are not comparable to "aluminium rims" for your car. There are just a very few of those replaced units available all over the world. Maybe there is a somewhat bigger chance to get discarded ones from an old series or from an exhibition. If you have the needed connections!

I'm sure RadioHolland, Sperry or Sam Electronics would renew some old models or flawed units a few times per year. They might be worthless for them, but of great value for someone who wants to make his own SCU :)  You just need to know the right person on the right place.

Before the ShipSim era, our rate of turn pilot for steering on the rivers died due to a coffee spill. The whole unit had to be replaced. Never thought of asking if i could have it though, if only you knew everything on forehand..

It's a bit of a fantasy of mine to have a recreated ship wheel and one engine telegraph of the Titanic for use in Ship Sim, though the price would likely be massive, and the practicality would be something to question

I don't even know where I'd look for the wood and metalworking!
