I was really hoping for a sim which would allow for open water passage making, with dead reckoning and celestial navigation, etc. It's clear SSE doesn't do that, at least not yet. Does SS 2008 allow for that?
Assuming no, is anyone aware of a maritime sim that does that sort of thing as well as the inshore stuff?
Thanks!

Hoy,
Yes, you're right about all the features of that game, however the graphic part of that game realy looks bad.Its like a cartoon, and what i ever experienced is that the dynamics of the vessel are not so accurate made also.
The only thing is they have more vessels and scenery, but at what costs.
People can make ships,i belief? But not everyone is a proper 3-D builder, some of the models are great, while others look like real crap.NO i prefer quality before quantity.

Hi Toyguy,
SSE nor SS08 has the possibility for dead reckoning or celestial navigation. You could simulate DR by making a chart of the ocean yourself, but in both games there is a difference beteen SOG and real speed. The real speed varies, depending on the computer you have. Players with high end computer have a higher real speed then those with a low end computer.
I don't think celestial navigation is on the dev's to-do list, since it's very specific which most players wouldn't be able to do :)

Flight Simulator X allows celestial navigation, but out-from-the-box it doesn't have any ships to player control (but few amphibious planes), but many freeware and commercial products are available, quote from some site "This is a game that spans the whole world and not only models the entire surface of the planet, but also maps thousands of the brightest stars in the sky to allow for celestial navigation".
Here's also (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C7koBLkMJ0) some random video from youtube showing some ship activity on FSX.
