Ship simmers ahoy !!!
Topics in the forum are rife with issues concerning dissatisfaction with SSE but there are some who are rather pleased with its performance.
May I suggest that those who are enjoying smooth missions, please reveal their PC configuration. It would also help those who are complaining to figure if they have a suitable PC and maybe also assist those (like me) planning on an upgrade.
Typically it could include the following info:-
AA) Processor
BB) Motherboard
CC) RAM
DD) Graphics card
EE) Power supply
FF) HDD
GG) Monitor
HH) Windows version

every setting in the game is maxed out, running at 1920x1200 very smooth even with FSAA (60 fps or so).
I've noticed some frame drops at the resolution of 2560x1600 especially looking at water splashes in front of the ship, but using FSAA don't really need to use that resolution.

Change your videocard first instead, you will then get better performance than if you change your cpu first, if you just play games..

Sir...
While most posts concerning this topic indicate the use of "high end" PCs, your simple statement stood out on its own and it was heartening to learn that your average PC config was letting you enjoy SSE. This would have indeed been most encouraging for those with PCs like yours hesitating to buy SSE. Thanks for sharing it. :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

Not all computers like Traddles's may be able to cope with the game, there are many variables..
He may be quite happy to run the game at 5 fps, with all graphics set low.. ;)

I'm afraid your graphic card is under the minimum specification - you need at least GeForce 8800 GT. Have a look at this website which list the benchmark for all makes and models of graphic cards:
http://service.futuremark.com/hardware/
Graphic cards need to score at least 6000 to have a satisfactory performance for SSE. Yours scored 1600 on the benchmark result, this would explain the 'lag' that you are experiencing, even at lowest settings.
I also noticed from your graphic card model that you're a laptop user - as already mentioned somewhere else on this forum, laptops are not renowned for playing intenstive games.

Its not a problem with XP that reads 4GB, is related to the fact that is a 32bit OS.

Sailing with all options to max. A quite low fps. (10 max) Even minimizing all options doesn't result in higher fps.

Hi Salty,
I have all graphics set high, NOT low. Do not ask me how I can play the game so well, I have no idea, I just can. Must be good luck and clean living. 9 to 12 FPS too, not 5. The 20FPS in top right is only when a static picture is there, not when playing the game.

My new computer :)
Runs SS08 on high graphics both in Nvidia panel and in game with extremely smooth gameplay.
Runs SSE well in single player, but begins to struggle when in Multiplayer. I run SSE on medium settings on the card, but keep water quality at around 3 quaters of the way (on the bar).
All other games I have to date run on high graphics with smooth gameplay (except for SSE), so I consider myself lucky

I just bought a Radeon 6870 to replace my 4850 and a new power supply. I tested my framerates again in several enviroments in the game and guess what? no change at all!
The results are exactly the same with my 6870 as they were with my 4850. So don't think a new video card will help, something is seriously wrong with this game.
The only thing I've gained is decibels (my PC is louder)...
My PC is a Core i7 2.66mhz, 6 GB RAM. The CPU never goes above 8% in this game. The memory is triple channel 1600. None of that is holding the game back, it has to be the code. I tested in XP 32 bit and Vista 64 bit with the exact same results.
-
Hi FREDMD2000,
That post regarding my graphics card (Nvidia 8600GTS) was made before any of the updates. I have since found that that computer was giving very poor performance with SSE and I have bought a new machine. I was finding that I was unable to test the game and its missions and updates satisfactorily. I attach DxDiag of new machine.
I am sorry if that post gave you a false impression.
Traddles.
-
So, does that mean the "updates" actually made things worse?
-
For a computer which was struggling anyway, sadly, Yes.

I just upgraded as well- and built it myself! (never have done that before)
i5-2500k at 3.8 (working on the overclock now, looking for 4.5 or so on air), 16g DDR3 Vengence ram, two 1TB Hard drives, GTX470 (down from the 2, but i think i will upgrade this in the spring as well along with the psu), Win7 64, Dell 24" LCD @ 1920x1200x32, 5.1 surround speakers.
I tried to recycle as much from my dell as i could but the new p8p67 board didnt fit in the old case, and the old PSU didnt fit into my new coolermaster 932 case, so i had to get a new PSU for the time being, and take one video card out. not overly concerned by it - things are running so smoothly (and quiet/cool) as compared to the dell.
