Title: Using 2 joysticks with SSE
Post by: will19984713 on September 07, 2010, 09:52:11
I have a Saitek joystick which i use for SS08, it may not be the most hi tech controller out there but it has a dual throttle and does the job.  Just wondered if anyone knew whether or not i could use 2 of these with SSE so that i can control boats with (forgive me but cant remember what they are called) propulsion units that rotate 360 degrees separately.

Many Thanks

Hi will19984713,

Yes, you can setup  the axis of two different game controllers .

I used to control the Bugsier 2 with 2 joysticks. In my opinion steering by keyboard doesn't do her justice - with 2 joysticks you completly benefit her maneuverability  :)

Well my new PC comes tomorrow as i thought i would dedicate a PC to ship sim, in the hope that SSE gets improved.  (only going by what other people have said) I shall judge that myself tomorrow.  Is this difficult to set up?

Its very simple to set up. You connect the joysticks prior starting SSE. In the menu you select the funktion you want to change and after that you pull the joystick to the side that you want to decidate to that function  :)

Please note that the azipod's have a 179,5° limit now but this will be fixed the patch  :)

Sure, no problem! Can you please register your license key here on the forum under profile? You also have acces to the technical board and other neat boards then  :)

Unfortunately I'm unable to get my Logitech G940 Throttles working with Engine 1 and 2 together with my logitech G27 Wheel for rudder. It does not recognize the trhottles. This is is because the program can only detect joystick 1 and 2... I would really like to see that I can use as many axis as I want. This way we can build more advanced shipcontrol systems.. Now it's very limited.  :(

I don't understand..I use a Saitek X52 Pro and a wheel..It works fine..
You could also consider creating a configuration-profile for the ships you want to control this way..

I've set up my "saitek pro flight yoke with throttles" and it works well.

Had the throttles round the wrong way (backwards for ahead, forwards for astern) at first, but that was my fault.

Turning the yoke does the rudder, not using the in/out motion of the yoke (normally used for evelator control on planes).

Thanks! If I disconnect the wheel, I'm able to use the throttles for the engines and the joystick for the rudder.. I've read the topic you suggested, but that doesn't help me much. The program does nothing when I want to configure the throttle and move it. (with the wheel connected)

Maybe a USB-hub would be handy, so you don't have to connect/disconnect every time.. :)

Hehe I already use an USB hub. That's not the problem. The problem is (i think..)  how Shipsim/Quest3D handles directX joystick inputs. I also have a custom build 8-axis controller with 36 buttons and it only accepts half the inputs. (only 20 buttons orso) The logitech g940 joystick is recognized by windows as three seperate controllers. The throttles are configured as the third. Unfortunately Shipsim does not recognize any third controller, so this setup will not work. (Wheel as joystick ID1 and throttles as ID3)
Second problem is that there is no way you can adjust the deadzone and sensitivity of any of the axis.
That's really disappointing because 'cockpit' builders like me would like to have more control of the axis and buttons, like any other Sim has. (for example MS flightsim and DigitalCombatSimulator)

Then I revert back to my suggestion of the different Profiles (how many controllers do you need for a ship ?)
About the deadzones, I have a moderate deadzone set up with my Saitek throttle..

I tried a lot of options, but I think I'm being misunderstood..  :)
I've made a new topic in the 'request features' section to explain what my problems and suggestion are. Thanks for your help and I apologize for being not clear.

Sorry I couldn't help.. :)
