Title: Two Important Questions Before I Order...
Post by: movieman162 on September 02, 2010, 18:59:47
Hello... long time no see.

As a former SS08 user i was rather intrigued with SSE mainly for its graphic and game play enhancements. Not being entirely convinced... i held off on pre ordering and instead waiting for the media for my final decision therefore im getting ready to order.

However one decider question... will it run?

Its an old desktop computer which ran SS08 fairly well not perfect but 8.5/10 however that was BEFORE i picked up the NIVIDIA GEFORCE which improved other games rather significantly.

The Specs.

Intel (R)
Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz
2.79GHz, 2.00GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension (160GB)
NIVIDIA GEFORCE 9500GT

I would prefer an answer ASAP so i can order from Amazon.co.uk and get it by at most saturday to enjoy in the weekend.

With that out of the way the second question. What boats and areas are included?

Thanks, Movieman162

Well, except for the processor speed (mine is 2.8 Ghz but I don't think that .01 Ghz is going to make much difference) and the amount of ram you have (I have 3 GB), your system sounds identical.....I do have an Athalon Dual-Core processor and my 9500 GT has 1 GB of video memory.

If that sounds like yours, then it should run very nicely!

I can't really answer that completely...as I haven't run the sim that much....I know it has Rotterdam, Solent (Southhampton), Marsaille, NY, Sydney, Bora Bora Islands, and the Antarctic regions plus San Francisco....I'm sure someone else will be through to fill in the ones I haven't been to yet

The only ships I've encountered is the 'Agile Solution', pilot boats, a twin hulled boat (Red Lines), there's a P&O liner in there too that I moored to in the Islands, a very large liner called 'Orient' Something, I've seen the VLCC cruising by, and I've seen the Vermaas, and I was able to get in on the 'Sigita' d/load too.  I know there are many others, but can't pull them out of the memory bank just this second.

Hope this helps

Jim

Well its not a dual processor so will be affect it?

I can't say absolutely...but my guess is that it might be necessary to turn down some of the settings.  Mine runs with everything set up all the way (it installed that way), and is very smooth running.

Good Luck with it,

Jim

From all the posts I've seen about the Steam versions and different ones on disk I would say, and this is just my personal opinion, you're better off getting the download version directly from VSTEP.

I'll second that

Ok thanks, one question if i do decide to buy download can i re-download it at any time? Is there a limit to this.

The reason i never buy download is because the risk of loosing said data.

movieman,

Unless you run XP you're already below the requirements. Your Pentium isn't the fastest around anymore, and your videocard scores 1400 on benchmark, which is a little on the low end.

To be honest, it might work on low settings, but don't be surprised if you end up with a ton of error messages.

Well, then it's a 50/50 chance I'd say ;)

Your other question, I think downloads are always available from your account page, at least mine is.

Ahoy movieman162,
I've noticed that you are a member for slightly over a year, and nobody bothered to welcome you
Well I say: Welcome to this Forum
About your question concerning SS Extremes:
Better place your DXDIAG here so we can see what your spec's are totally.
In case you don't know how:
Go to Start, go to Run, type dxdiag and hit enter (or just press it gently).
About the WHQL question from Micro$oft click Yes.
Do any test you can do and finally save all results to an easy to remember location. By default yur desktop.
After that come back here and place a reply, click Additional Options, (just left beneath where you type your message) click on Browse, browse to the dxdiag.txt file, click it once and click open.
Then post your message.
Kind Regards
Aad the Pirate
P.S.
The file would look something like the attached one.

videocard scores 1400 on benchmark, which is a little on the low end.
I'm sure that my card (NVidia GForce GT 240) will show a much lower benchmark, but I run SS Extremes with all Graphical Levels as high as possible without any errors at all

Thanks for the welcome aad, yes I will give that a try as soon as I can get on the computer.

A GT240 scores 4100, that's 3 times his score ;)

Something else that struck me when looking at your dxdiag is that very few people with AMD processors are reporting problems. Hmm...interesting.

Anyway...

It says under process all the gHz info and then (2 CPU's)? Does that mean its dual core?

See for yourself anyways...

Yes, the Pentium "D" refers to dual-core. It was the next processor from Intel after Pentium 4.

Btw, your system doesn't look too bad, but videocard a little weak so it's hard to say how it will handle SSE.

Not bad, not bad at all. But if I where you, I would invest in a "heavier" Graphic Card with 1 GByte Memory . At minimum I advice to update yur video drivers, your's are a bit old.
Good Luck with whatever you decide.
Kind Regards
Aad

If you can affort it, buy a new graphic card. I'm using the GForce GT240 1 GByte Mem.

I noticed this question hasn't been answered yet (either that, or I accidentally skipped over it lol), but no worries.. the keys and the download links remain available on the website :)

Another thing you can do is burn the files on an empty DVD yourself and store it in a safe location. It is just a few files anyways :)
