Title: Oil tanker in Cape Cod Canal
Post by: trains on July 06, 2010, 22:35:25
So yesterday, my dad and his father were driving over the Cape Cod Canal on the Sagamore Bridge, and they both saw this ship sailing towards the Atlantic

The thought a ship this large fit through the canal was amazing, seeing as it twists a lot. It's normal for us to see tugs with barges, but I never thought that would make it through

She's 182 meter (597.1 ft) I wish I was there to see it

Sorry to almost double the size of your vessel but...  This thing was HUGE!!! Our boat was at the very base of the ship as it passed us. I was talking to one of the deck hands later and I asked him how close the ship comes to the bottom of the railroad bridge (The 2nd largest vertical lift bridge in the world, his reply was, "At low tide the ship's bridge comes within 10 feet of the bridge span. We have to lower some of the comm antennas.")

Wow. And I thought that Oil Tanker was big :p lol. I don't see much on the canal except for the usual tugs and vessels from locals.

I think I saw her in Sandwich Cape Cod, coming into the canal one day after I left the beach.

I see things like this all the time I had a 130 footer come in for the night at the marina  :)

She is 199m.

I think there isn't any car carrier that huge.

oh, did I really make that error and then roll with it on the conversion...  I feel like I just took a wrong answer on a high school math test. :P  I got my information on that exact site too!

Hehe, but it still is a big ship!

I think the biggest car carrier is the MV Faust with a length of 227m (but I am not 100% shure of that)

Seemed big enough when I could read the depth markers on the bow.

I remember watching a show about that ship and I remember them saying it was the largest car carrier so that sounds right  ;)
