I fully appreciate that posted topics should really be based on a `maritime` theme. So :---- If the World Cup games were to be played on the deck of an aircraft carrier [a super carrier of course], then quite apart from all the lost balls, half of the players would probably also be lost overboard. This because they would be slipping and sliding in the layer of `slime` that they themselves would have deposited upon the deck by their constant spitting all over the place. Half of them would simply go skidding straight over the side. I find it pretty disgusting to think that when a player goes down it`s more than likely that he will actually be rolling around in the `slime` of other players. If my memories are true then I do not recollect any spitting to speak of when I was a `kid` playing for my school, nor when later playing in local teams. Neither can I recall any spitting to speak of when doing `forced marches` and cross country runs in the Army. When attending games as a spectator and in the days of black and white TV I cannot really remember players spitting all over the place either. Are my memories true ? Tell me someone ! If my memories ARE correct, then this spitting `thing` must be a present day phenomenon ? Perhaps there`s a physical training instructor or someone out there who could give me a logical explanation as to why footballers have to continually spit all over the place ? [ Or, to maintain the `maritime legality` of this topic I should maybe amend that last bit to read
`give me logical justification for continuing to lose our carrier bourne players overboard ].
STRICTLY SMALL TALK ! All answers considered, and jokes accepted !

I hate spitting. Loathe it. The only things that should come out of a professional footballer's mouth are the answers to my physics homework. Unfortunately, I think it's a bit beyond them.
There is really no reason to spit, Like you said, you never did it whilst exercising, and I manage to go without it as well. Certainly, there are no spitoons in the gym.
Worse still, it is a habit which is appearing amongst people my age, and it's a shame, because it does nothing to help people's opinions of us.

Well said McGherkin !

Thankyou.

I agree with McG, spitting is a disgusting habit.
I think footballers do it just to look "cool". ::)

I think they do it to make sure that the ground is nice and soft for their next theatrical dive.
