i just saw "the hunt for the red october"
I must say this is an excelent movie :-X
now i have 2 questions about it.
1.) is the nuclear submarine "Red October "
Real or fictional ? cause i found the russian submarine(The "Akula") that got blown up shortly b4 the ending.
And also the USS Dallas wich played in along in the show
2.)I did some searches on google.
and noticed THIS!
The typhoon(world largest russian submarine) and the red october look alike, there like submarine sisters.
Heres the clear question: Is the red october a copy from the typhoon with certain things a bit changed?
or not?
Feel free to answer

The Red October, like the fictional ship of 2006 Poseidon, are fictional. The Poseidon of '06 is based off of the Queen Mary 2. So Red October is actually based off the Typhoon. Similarities between the Poseidon and QM2: Stern deck walls on the sides are similar, both around the same length, both have same type of cranes in same area. So Red October has major similarities to Typhoon, meaning ships and other marine time vehicles that are fictional are based off actual ships.
Poseidon-QM2
Red October-Typhoon
Antonia Graza (Ghost Ship (2002))-Andrea Doria
So movies with vessels that look like an actual ship are based off that ship.

The story of the real red October was about a Krivak class guided missile frigate called "Storozhevoy".A political officer Valery Sablin mutinied in November 1975 and tried to sail from Riga to the Swedish island of Gotland. He and the rest of the mutineers were caught and later shot.
Regards Jim.

So we can assume the "caterpillar-drive" is a Hollywood invention.. ;)
-
maybe so or maybe not

Only the Russians would try to power a sub with caterpillars. Do they realize how much those little guys eat?
Seriously, there has been research on electro-hydrodynamic drives, but so far no joy. Power wise, they eat even more than caterpillars.

Fuel eaters. :C
