Title: Engine sounds
Post by: freeciv on April 28, 2010, 21:15:28
What is your opinion on the engine noises?

Personally I think they are unrealistic and too generic sounding. But that is just me.

Well I can tell you that they certainly are realistic plugged into my stereo, I can feel the engines vibrating beneath me!

That must add some realism. ::)

I have been meaning to get a stereo system, but with normal speakers they sound poor and the speakers are good speakers.

Well my stereo is one of the old Pioneers, when there was no such thing as 'safe listening levels' and the speaker stacks are roughly as tall as my legs. The bass is strong too, so it may be the stereo more than the sounds.

I like the steam sounds of the Furie..  It's the additional constant high-pitch hum that gets on my nerves..

I like the sound of the steam engine. If you go to the back of Titanic you can hear it's steam engine all though it seams to quiet but, what do I know I was not there  ;)

Agreed, but I normally just turn that off when I use Furie. :)

With the flying cloud it is annoying that you can turn off the engines...

Many years ago I sailed Deep Sea and Home Trade and For a time I was an oiler in the engine room and I also was a deck hande and helmsman.. I must say that the engine sounds on 08 are pretty realistic.. so those that dont like them.. may I ask have you done any sailing of any kind, and spend months with that sopund in the backround 24/7.. after a while you dont really notice it any more.. as a matter of fact once in port and main engines shut down, the boilers are allways still operating to supply generators (on a steam ship anyways) to keep the ship powered.. for longer stays in harbour or for repairs a ship sometimes takes on land power...

Yea you revived it!  ;D
I agree with you, but the sounds on the larger ships are what annoy me.
