Title: TFM's Computer Issues
Post by: The Ferry Man on March 19, 2010, 21:54:59
Hi All,

Just to let you know I am current;ly facing Major Computer issues, as my Main OPC seems to have died.

Started with a blue screen that restarted the computer, but took 10 minutes before it actually decided it would, then it crashed again, and it wouldn't load,  but now it just doesn't start at all - the fan comes on and that is it  :(

Coluldn't have come at a worse time ioether - my final work fir university due in three weeks  :-\

So I may not be on so much at the moment

(any ideas what could be wrong also appreciated  :-\)

Hi Mark,

Could be wrong, but it sounds something like the 'Blue screen of death', but, as I say, don't take my word for that...Maybe somebody will be able to give you a definite answer :)

Sorry to hear about the problems...always terrible when something goes wrong, especially as you say, when you have work on it :-[

Blue screen of death...?

It had wrioting on it, and some thing that counted up to 100 before restarting?

Yes windows ecountered an error and stopped your computer from doing anything else. Then it probably created a dump file which is why it started to 'count'.

Have you tried booting in safe-mode??

Do you see a black screen with writing as soon as you turn the computer on?

'Blue Screen of Death': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Screen_of_Death

As I say, I could be totally wrong...I assume you don't see Windows Startup or anything like that? I was going to suggest trying F8.

Jack.
p.s. see Adam beat me to safe mode!

The computer no longer starts up at all now - press the main power button, the fan starts up, but nothing happens - the red light that flashes when it does something doesn't light up at all, and nothing comes on the screen at all - remains on standby mode

TFM,
Open up your computer look to see if there is tons of dust in it. What is it doing exactly?

+ check if all the fans are working properly.

It could be that the motherboard went out.   Had the same problem some months ago due to dust in the fan above the processor.

Well heard today it was the Motherboard gone  :(

If that wasn't bad enough, the DVD-Drive was hardwired to that motherdrive, so I have to have a new case as well to get the Drive working

All my pictures are backed up onto CD, and my University Work is on a USB Stick

They say they are gping to back up my work...

Especially since one thing I didn't back up was my Ship designs...  :'(

If the drive itself is OK you should be able to buy a caddy for around £15 to convert it to an external USB drive.

What can cause a motherboard to go..?

An apparent dislike to me...

This is the second motherboard that has gone...

The computer I had before this one had the Hard drive and Motherboard go about a week or so after I brought it...   :-\

I repaired a blue screen of death last week ::) Fun task, was actually caused by a virus. Its quite strange that your dvd drive was hard wired directly to the mother board, i've never seen that before as normally they have interchangable data cables. Hopefully you have better luck in the future ;)

Perhaps a surge-protector would be a good investment..

Well the BSOD happend to me a couple of month ago caused by a virus. my brothers friend was
"LOOKING UP STUFF ON MY PC" that would get me a virus. (and i all hope you know what i mean by  "looking up stuff means" beacause im not ganna go to any more details) but any way after that i told my friend  what happend. He is like 20 years old and he is a computer wiz, so i asked him if he can fix it so he did the only thing he couldnt fix was the virus so he just told me to get virus protection.

P.S i didnt have virus protection at the time because my other one expired and i never had the time to get AVG for free

he didn't fix the virus, that was basically the main thing to fix.... other than the bsod.

I don't know...

They should do these were saved a few weeks ago - I haven't got the Bilbao ship I designed, or the Spirit of Tas replacement (but this one I have a copy from Nathan).

I now just need to work out how to get SketchUp 6 - Google only seem to offer v7 now...
