First of all: welcome BigBear..
If you use the search function you will find plenty of topics about this..
It would also be usefull if you learn something about the workings of Voith Schneider propulsion.. ;)

This topic is well worth looking at too:-

Look in "Missions manual" pages 17 &18.
-
BTW, wouldn't it be good to put that one for Red Eagle & some from there (http://80.95.161.114/shipsim/forum/index.php/topic,2886.msg28895.html#msg28895) in to "Tutorials" board in one topic?
-
Why..? We all have figured it out.. :)
-
For new members, because when one came here for the first time & want to know how to steer the RE, it can be confusing to find the manual about it on the board "Missions" (besides, some steering manuals go as a chapter in the Mission Editor manual) when he's not interested in missions or haven't got any questions about them yet.
So it'd be like Tutorials > "How to contrlol..." > How to control the Red Eagle/Ocean Star/hovercraft/azimuth thruster on JJ/Container Crane...
-
How about a manual: "ShipSim for Dummies"...?
"When you steer left on the Ocean Star, you will go right".. ;)
-
Or if WM gave the right link in the first place, instead of his usual quickie hit-and-run tactics.
There is little reason to think they are any more likely to look in Tutorials. It is less trouble for them to ask.
I prefer to keep all of the manuals that I write in one place so that I can keep them updated without having to search the forum for other copies.

Hi BigBear,
The link that Traddles gave you is the best place to start, as it contains other documents that you might find useful.
In addition, more information on Voith-Schneider propellers can be found here:

In this picture the Red Eagle is turning anti-clockwise on its axis
Red arrow = bow direction, blue arrow = stern direction
Red circle = bow thrust, blue circle = stern thrust..
