Title: The Falkland Islands
Post by: Jammy on March 03, 2010, 00:36:58
The Falklands War was a historic moment in the 20th century, and it looks like Argentina is trying to start it again. With the British oil rig drilling around the Falkland coast, and Argentina restricting shipping movements to the Falklands in an attempt to interfere with the drilling. And now even Argentina is convincing all of the South Americas that the Falkland Islands are theirs under sovereign rights.
But the thing is, the 3000 residents on the Falkland islands WANT to be British, they don't like Argentina at all. So I don't get what all the fuss is about between diplomatic governments, shouldn't it be a choice of the residents of the islands?

Your opinions on this issue?

Wow Stuart agrees with me, that is unusual! Although I disagree with your points about our government. Sure I hate it as much as the next British man, but it's still one of the finest in the world. Compared to Argentina whose government I don't know much about, but don't appear to be good rulers for the small islands according to the island's residents.
And despite losing our allies to the Argentines, that's including USA (so much for our help with Afghanistan and Iraq), we are still able to take on Argentina on our own as the 1984 war proved. For every four Argentine soldiers we lost one British soldier, I'm sure in 26 years we haven't suddenly become the worst army ever. So military wise is not a problem. Diplomatic wise I'm unsure, but we have good reasons to keep the islands  as its the residents of the island's wish.

Wow I do seem to get a lot of facts wrong, I got the year mixed up I admit that. The only knowledge I have about the Falklands is from a 20th Century book, Wikipedia and the film This Is England (which was actually against the war but I still disagreed whilst still enjoying the film). And although I'm not sure of our army being the best in the world, I am aware that our navy is the best in the world and considering the Falklands is obviously an island, we have the upper hand in not only assault but also defence.
Out of curiosity though, we had not even discovered oil back in 1982 around the Falklands so for what reason did we retrieve our islands back for if not for the small group of residents who preferred being under British rule? (Baring in mind back then they weren't considered British officially)

It was a matter of prestige- no one attacks us with impunity.

Jammy, I've been 'advised' that my comments are in-appropriate for the forum. I am happy to continue in PM if you wish, but for the sake of avoiding any more aggro, I will not be posting again in this.

Oh, and there's been suspicions of oil there since late 1930s- Britain looking for fuel supplies.

Okay sounds reasonable, although this topic is still open for all others who wish to discuss it.

the islands are british, will remain british & we WILL fight for them, be in no doubt.
this time with the added incentive of oil.
i think that's happened somewhere else in the world, not sure.
