Title: Of mice and mouses

What is a trackball?

I use a Laser Mouse, with two button ands a scroll wheel...

This one, in fact...

A trackball is what is shown in the picture, the whole thing stays in one place and you move the mouse by rolling the ball with your thumb, they take a bit of getting used to, but they are great.

We use them at work.
Title: Re: Of mice and mouses
Post by: The Ferry Man on February 27, 2010, 11:31:31
I think I would prefer to move the mouse, personally...
Title: Re: Of mice and mouses
Post by: clanky on February 27, 2010, 11:38:53
Yeah, trackballs seem a bit strange at first, but the big advantage of the trackball is that you don't need the space to move it around.  This can be a huge advantage in a cluttered space or in a space which tends to roll around a lot.

Post by: mvsmith on February 27, 2010, 13:17:42
Hi salty,

Trackballs are very handy, especially when you have limited, or no, space. I use a Microsoft thumb ball with the laptop, on my knee when necessary. The Microsoft had a slightly larger ball than the Logitech, but I’ve not seen one in the stores for some time.

Prolonged use of a thumb ball can lead to a sore thumb, so I prefer a Wacom tablet mouse for the desktop systems.

Regards,
Marty

Clanky,
The disadvantage in a space that rolls a lot: When the mouse lands on the deck, the ball pops out and heads for the scuppers.

we used to have a track ball on our boat, for a laptop, which worked as the GPS, though that's been changed now into something better.

Computer mouse are funny things, they tend do be quite strange. Like getting broken in interesting ways. Keyboards are even more interesting. SD should make a keyboard topic..

I had a wireless mouse, but it ended up on the floor a couple of times, and it used batteries, makig it expensive - thus I have gone back to a wired mouse

It is called a typing error, Mr McGherkin. Do you not find you make them every now and then (if not, I'd be happy to point them out). I tend to find they occur only when I can't really be bothered.

Now- go and argue with TFM instead. :C

Probably since I type on an American keyboard. It's different. The essential layout is the same, but some of the more 'special' characters are either moved, or not on here entirely, essentially changing quite a bit.

Title: Re: Of mice and mouses

Yes. Our layout is like this:

F1 F2 F3 F4 F5 F6 F7 F8 F9 F10 F11 F12
`1234567890-=Backspace
~!@#$%^&*()_+ Backspace
TABqwertyuiop[]\
TABQWERTYUIOP{}|
CAPSLOCKasdfghjkl;'ENTER
CAPSLOCKASDFGHJKL:"ENTER
SHIFTzxcvbnm,./SHIFT
SHIFTZXCVBNM<>?SHIFT
CTRL WINDOWS/SUPER ALT SPACE ALT CONTEXTMENU CTRL

Those are all the standard keys. Of course, you can also use this easier to read alternative:

If we want to make something like 'ø' as in Norrøna for example, I have to do the "Alt + 0248" to get it.

Ah, that. That is the same character as '|' such as in 'Nathan|C'. Sometimes it's printed as having dots. Try it, go into the command prompt and it should print with dots instead of being a line.

Title: Re: Of mice and mouses
Post by: Firestar on March 01, 2010, 23:17:03
Oh, it's basically a command line emulator for the Windows GUI. Basically, it allows you to execute commands to preform various actions such as copying a file, you just do it with code. Computers of the old days used to be like the command prompt, except that was it. There was no cursor or start menu. Now it's mainly used for preforming special advanced tasks. ;)
