what program do you use to make ships for ship simulator 2008 ??????????????? an Does it cost anything ??????????????? can we even use it ??????
please reply

You have to use quite a professional Design Software for SS Ships (= £££££)
And they have to meet the design criteria
-
3ds Max 2009 (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/index?siteID=123112&id=13567410)
Modo (http://www.luxology.com/modo/)
Maya (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/index?siteID=123112&id=13577897)
Lightwave (http://www.newtek.com/lightwave/#)
* It's recommended that the program can produce baked textures and texture maps (normal maps, bump maps, specular maps and diffuse maps).
-
I use Solidworks 2009 SP3
(= £££££)
But people model in Blender, Google Sketchup, (not £££££, free!) any program really...
As for Ship Simulator 2008 itself, It uses Questviewer.
-
can you you use google sketchup then export it to the ship sim modeling program????
-
Yes, although no program is really used for modeling, it's all done in your own. As long as it ends up in .x or .3ds it's fine.

Also, JHB, I don't think that the ShipSim engine supports bump maps, and I'm questioning the specular maps.

Holly...
Do I really need to elaborate a technical explanation on this? You are probably right about this, but It might be useful to have a software that supports these maps BECAUSE it might happen one day that the SS-engine support such maps as well. And who knows what the Extremes-engine will support huh? :P
And it's not all about maps, it's mostly about unwrap UVW or texture baking. So if the editor you are using isn't supporting that, oh ...well, then you have a problem. Because, according to the guideline (which I have translated even into Norwegian) you need to make texture maps in the power of two (so what does that mean huh?). And not all editors supports uwrap UVW and texture backing so...
But people model in Blender, Google Sketchup, (not £££££, free!) any program really...
False! The editor need to support those things I have in short elaboration explained above. :P
As for Ship Simulator 2008 itself, It uses Questviewer.
...where Quest3D is a game engine or an editing software visualizing 3D or 2D graphics (which is a product made by Act-3D (http://quest3d.com/). And it doesn't mean that you need to buy that product for several euros (a pretty high price) to make a boat for this game. :) All you need is an editor that supports unwrap UVW and texture baking. Without them you are not able at all to produce texture maps.
And jupp.. you will likely need to spend money until the day someone here proves that you can make a ship for Ship Simulator with 100% free software. Until then...cya ;D

I know this is a little off topic, but on the Quest 3d main page, does anyone notice the ShipSim screenshot on the bottom right corner?

I’m pretty sure that the Padstow environment uses bump maps.
-
Hmm, I see what you now that I think of it, I wonder if ships can too though..
-
Sorry for draggin thisoldish thread up but...
I have been thinking...
Is there any SU similar 3d Modelling software that could be used for SS08/SSE?
-
Here I found a list of free 3d modeling applications, but I'm familiar & can model only in SU.

hehe Me too...
But can any be used for SS...?
-
Blender & TrueSpace - yes, for sure. ;)
-
It's more of the modeler than the program. Format is almost nothing with the various exporters these days.
True, but I still couldn't use SU...
-
isn't it su pro
-
sketch up pro
-
Isn't what SU pro? The program to make ships for SS? Not necessarily, no. There's no single program, people use Maya, 3ds Max, theoretically anything could be used. It's more the format these days. :)
Solidworks Fail ;D

AC3D mainly

It can make 3DS files...

And thanks for this link!!!!!!!!!

In fact it does not matter what you use, the only thing that matters is can the 3D editor you use write 3ds files?
I documented a part of it here:
http://www.robenrinie.nl/3d.htm (http://www.robenrinie.nl/3d.htm)
I hope this will help most people who want to create ships in 3D.
At the bottom of the page the real clue on what you need to get them sailing in ShipSimulator.
