Title: Sinking a ship
Post by: Ekig on February 09, 2010, 08:51:02
I am interested in sinking a ship. I tried the ~ key but it didn't bring anything up. Any suggestions?

Hi Ekig,

If you damage a vessel below the waterline, it will most likely sink, so a run in with something solid, usually does the trick. Or try the ~sink command.  Try holding down shift when you hit the ~ key.

However, the ships do not sink realistically, and the game stops once the ship has sunk partially. And no, there's no better way or means to avoid the 'game over' trigger. This is ship simulator after all, not sink simulator. ;)

Regards,
Fred

Would it be possible to sink a ship by dropping ancor or do you have to damage the ship?

I was doing a mission with the Pride of Rotterdam and dropped ancor at full speed, the bow went under and she nearly capsized!

Hi coyotes_uk,

Well, yes. You can capsize a ship by dropping anchor at speed. Can't be at full speed though, the anchor can't be dropped whilst going any speed over 5 knots.

But if you go roughly 5 knots and drop it, it'll be fast enough, and it'll capsize most vessels in the game.

Though that's not the same as sinking ofcourse..   in some cases though, it'll sink when the angle is right... or.. wrong, depending how you look at the incident that follows..  ::)

Actually, Fred, the anchor can be dropped in SS at any speed over 5 kn by using the so-called "Nathan's Anchor Trick".
Though that doesn't work for powerboat, if I remember well.

This is not the game for sinking ships..
You should get Silent Hunter.. 8)

No idea what that is, actually..  I'm too busy keeping them afloat to remember such tricks...

I’m as bored with this subject as Fred is. Many others on this forum find the fascination with sinking distasteful.

There is much information about sinking in the simulator to be found on this forum if one just looks for it using the Search facility rather than starting yet another topic. Like some other practices, it is better to just do it, if that is your thing, rather than talk about it.

Having said that, the mechanics of sinking in SS are explained in the Missions Manual and the Mission Editor Tutorial, which can be found here:

You might as well learn something about SS while pursuing your prurient interests.

I am not bored, simply disinterested and aloof..It's a kiddie topic..
Which is why I suggested getting Silent Hunter, so he can sink ships to his little hearts content..
(or else get a leaky rubber ducky.. :) )

Sinking isn't funny, it's dangerous, and potentially fatal.

Anyway, I try my best to avoid sinking, collision and careless manoeuvres. It's not good to get into bad habits when you intend to go into the marine industry. It makes me shudder when I think that potentially people like this could be at the helm of a 58 foot weapon boat.

I think this topic is pretty much resolved.  :)

I'll lock it now.
