Title: Thank you for all those add-ons!
Post by: Warspite2 on November 27, 2009, 15:01:48
Just thought I would stop here and tell the developers thanks! Every week or two I am getting an email of a new free add-on that either has updated a current ship or some even added new a ship. Ship Sim has came a very long way since the beginning and its gotten really "up there" through this time.  :2thumbs:

I enjoy them very much....Oh I have a question I didnt notice a horn change for the Igor K or Sherpa, is that an installation problem or just they werent changed

I heard the difference in JJ's, PoR's, RJ4's, Red Eagle's, RPA12's and Igor K.'s horns. They have a lower buzz in there. It is kinda a bit hard to hear over the Horn pack from Mad_Fred and TerryRussell. But Terry's is way much better over the original, but all who made the Super Packs are given a gratitude of thanks from me. And to Mad_Fred and TerryRussell for the Radio and Horn packs before the SPs came. Great Job all! ;)

Many of the super pack horns will sound similar to the version in the horn sounds pack I made previously, but they are now much longer and I have added depth & reverb etc. In some cases I have remade them from scratch to increase the quality of the sound. That applies to Igor K and Sherpa, certainly.

All of the new radio sounds in the add-ons are new recordings made by me during my travels. I edit them to remove commercial information and I often make radio conversations from parts of many recordings. In some cases I get friends round and we spend an evening recording imaginary radio conversation. As those friends are the very people you would hear on the ship's radios, that makes it sound very authentic.

With the new Sherpa Super Pack you might find that the turning of the vessel seems a little poor. It only seems to show up on some PCs. LucAtC has taken a look at the dynamics and come up with a revised version.

I have uploaded the updated Super Pack to the VSTEP system, but it probably won't get linked to the Shipyard until Monday. You'll know if you have the new version, because it says "V1.1" in the title bar at the top of the install box.

If you are really struggling, just reinstall the version that is there now and select the original dynamics.

I'd only suggest changing it if Sherpa seems very sluggish at turning.

Hi Terry,

When I installed super pack for Portoferraio Angel, I've noticed her bow thruster was almost non-existence (really slow - about 0.5 knots). Does anyone have this problem as well? (she is fine otherwise)

Dont get me wrong, I am really enjoying the Super Packs with all these extra missions and smaller controls

Hi Kevin.

In some cases, when the power of engines and thrusters have been made more realistic, it has meant that the power has been reduced. Often, the original developers had no data available and went for something that felt right. In more than a few cases, even though they had data  from pilot cards and manufacturer's testing, the  data was actually incorrect or incomplete.

As we uncover better data sources, we have modified the various characteristics.

To be honest, I can't recall if P. Angel was one of those vessels, but it may well have been. 0.5 kt sounds about right.

Ah, we're very glad you guys are all appreciating it. Let me take the opportunity to thank Terry and his Creators Forum team for their wonderful add-ons for the game.

Excellent work, every week again, for which we are more than happy to provide a platform (The Shipyard) for the entire community to enjoy their work. But that's the easy part.  ;)

Kind regards,
Frank

Agreed, A brilliant christmas superpack, Terry! Love the new ship, good to see her back from SS06, she's very towable(!).

I take it that's the original model? What changes did you have to make to get her into SS08?

Is it possible that the SS06 yacht could make a triumphant return?

Oh and is it possible to reskin the bouys then?
Title: Re: Thank you for all those add-ons!
Post by: TerryRussell on December 18, 2009, 16:05:45
Actually, it made it into the game as the AI Small Container Vessel. I took that as my starting point and then remade it as a new playable vessel, as the AI is just a hull, basically. It took about 3-4 months of work. A lot of that was work on turning the 3D model into a working ship. That's where the real hard work is conducted (the model is less than 10% of the total work required. But that 10% is still a huge amount of work).

Unfortunately the 2006 ships aren't transferable. Sorry. I'd love that Super Yacht as well. If I could, I would.

Yes, the buoys are sort of reskinable. But due to the way that the skins wrap around, you can't get stripes etc. Otherwise I'd have done that as well!

The testers have also done a marvellous job, providing me with lots of good information about the handling of the vessel and its lighting and mooring and turning and so on.

Ok, thanks for the info!

I've just checked the download function and found a couple of minor problems. So I've fixed them and uploaded an update. Some people might not have got all the missions installed when they clicked the relevant buttons. That should work OK now.

The "Container Trials" mission had a waypoint that had decided to go and live on the land. I've fixed that. Strange, as it was fine in my version that I uploaded. Must have got corrupted along the way somewhere!

If you have already downloaded and installed the game, you should do it again, and all will be installed for you.

I hope everyone has been enjoyng the add-on packs this year, they are really good arent they!  ;)

Like I said before everyone on the team works extremely hard to get these packs ship-shape for the shipsim players to play them, from small things like testing the missions to bigger things like making fully playable ships.
Its amazing what can be achieved.

Many kind regards to the team:

I'd love to use the add ons. After I've installed them, they appear in the Custom Missions folder but when I try to play that sim they report that there is no such ship in the game.

What can I do to fix this please?

AMD3700, 4 Gb DDR, XPsp3, 9800GT NVidia card and all the other stuff you'd expect. Works fine with basic SS2008.

All guidance appreciated

Sounds like you don't have New Horizons installed. Many of the missions ned the extra ships that come with it. If you look at the readme file, it tells you which ones don't need it. One of them is £San Francisco Cargo Run". Try that one first.
