Title: I assume this will be an enormous help to all modelers

Anyone got a wooden ship model? I know I have. The best thing is some one has made a laser scanner! works with any webcam and all you need is the software (trail avalible I think) and a laser. A leveler lazy, Not like a pointer =)

That's an awesome trick..  ;D

I happen to have a leveler laser... and a webcam.. but.. somehow it's not the same as taking a bodyplan and lineplan, setting it all up, and doing it by hand..  it's not really modeling this, it's scanning..

Awesome as it might be, this low cost solution, I would probably still prefer doing it myself to be honest.. much more gratification in it for me personally...  :-\

Even so, thanks for sharing.. very interesting! I'm probably gonna try it out one of these days.. if my gear can do this.  :thumbs:

Same here to be honest, I do like the idea, and can have its plus points, but when it comes to modelling, I would rather do it myself knowing I had actually achieved something.

Still, an excellent idea - and I would test it out if possible :)

I have two leveler lasers lying here, of different quality. (simple DIY one and a more sturdy - and stronger/brighter professinal one, with a thinner beam too)

And a webcam that, so far, does everything that the tutorial suggest I should do with it..

Software installed aswell.. now I just have to print the calibration sheets and create the background panels.. and then it will be - probably, with my luck - 6 hours of fiddling with settings, lights, position of the gear..  etc..  I suspect strong language and flying cordless mice and keyboards before this thing gives me a result worth showing off..  ;D

But I'm keen to try, nonetheless..  

I'll post here, if I manage to make it all work.. it's not -as far as the many settings you have to get 100% right go - all as straight forwards and easy as that video makes it out to be.  ;)

We'll see...  ;D

Well, these guys have had great results with very cheap equipment, a leveler laser needn't be a big investment, nor the webcam. .

I havent browsed their forum yet, but I am sure there are topics on their forum listing certain make and/or models as 'proven to work', that are also cheap.. 20 to 30 Euro's probably gets you a leveler that will do the trick, I reckon.

I think that building a ship model is a LOT more work then building a 3D model.
So I wouldn't appreciate it to much.

I've decided not to buy a laser leveller.
one person in the comments said a laser pointer and the thin part of a wine glass would produce a good line to work with. This weekend i'll try and give it a go, but i've got to think of a place where it's really dark, since the Oakley lives out at my grandparents' house.

It is interesting for sure.. but it has many quircks..  :)

I tried with two webcams now, and with both a cheap and expensive laser leveler, but no succes yet..

I think I need a better webcam, the two I have at my disposal either are too old, or too low quality, but I cannot perfectly recreate all the settings as shown in the documentation with them, and their software..  :-\

But still, a funny thing to fiddle with.. and maybe with a better webcam..  who knows.. i'm gonna try some more once I get round to getting one.  ;D

Well, i'll be using a 7.0MP camcorder to do it so hopefully image quality won't be a problem.

That should do fine I think.  :)

It's more about contrast, and lights and all.. to get the best and tightest laser beam possible so it will give the least ammount of 'noise' and reflection and all..
