Title: Firestar
Post by: Capt. Matt on October 18, 2009, 03:11:28
Shane told me to tell everyone this:

"I'm unable to go on the forum because every time I try going to it it loads for 1 second, then tries to redirect me to some sort of ad site I think, but WOT and AVG block it so I can't get on."

What a shame  :-[

Hi Matt,
Perhaps Shane could get in by using a link directly to a board, rather than the main entry.
Another possibility is that he is triggering one of the ads at the bottom of the forum page. I’ve had that happen to me a couple of times while going to another page.
Regards,
Marty

Isn't WOT an advisory feature (add-in for Firefox, add-on for IE)..?  I don't think it blocks anything..
Perhaps he should check his cookies.. :)

Message from Shane:

"Hello everybody, I'm still working on correcting this. Tomorrow I am going to try emptying my cookies and my cache. Also, SaltyDog, WOT does in fact block something if you type a bad site into the address bar.
Thanks,
Shane"

Tomorrow I am going to try emptying my cookies...

I don’t know if that will fix his computer problem, but it’s an effective, temporary, relief from seasickness.

Good luck to Shane.

Use a different browser until he gets firefox fixed?

I think I know the solution. Tell him to deactivate AVG safesearch in Firefox.

Tools>Add-ons>Extensions>AVG Safesearch, and Disable.

I was suffering a similar problem last week, but not with this forum. Nearly everything else though.

Also,

It seems the problem has been corrected.. I had the same thing (although you can just click the 'ignore this warning' link and still open the website) but it is now no longer an issue for me. Vstep knew about this issue, and went and had a talk with the ads people.

Seems fixed! Let's hope Shane can get back on now!

Guess who's back? ;D
Clearing my cookies and Cache was all it took.

And before I forget, Fred, I don't know if Jack told you but hitting the "Go to anyway" fuction did not work, it simply made me go to an actual ad site, not the forum.

Yeah with me too, but then when I hit 'previous site' it would pop back to the forum instead of the warning message page.  :-\

and err.. I don't think it was to do with your cookies, vstep took care of the problem, the problem was not actually on your computer.

Anyways, good to see you on again, welcome back!  :2thumbs:

For such cases I have a CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) installed - just select what you want to clean & it does the rest.  ;D

It just happened again, I got redirected while looking at a topic. I cleared my cookies and I got back in. I suspect the ads keep trying to load me to places, I don't like them one bit.

The ads? There is an ad blocker for FireFox, I'll check that out. But I'm not happy that VSTEP allows these ads to distribute cookies that redirect me to strange places.

I only just noticed that I have an adblocker for Firefox, it's called ABP
Must have added it some time ago..

err... they don't. They are just adverts that appear in various places on the page. No redirection involved.

Are you sure Terry? Then why was I redirected?

Because "I reject your reality and substitute my own!", as Almighty Lord Of The Holy Llamas says in his sig.  ;D

There are so many user-adjustable settings in IE and Firefox, not to mention your antiviral software and firewall software that it is almost impossible to guess which one or combination it was, but almost certainly, it was one or more of them...  ;)

My suspicion is that it was AVG again. Last year (or was it the year before?) they had an episode when AVG kept telling me that my copy of Ship Simulator was infected and was trying to delete it for me. When I spoke to AVG, it was one of their detection heuristics that was mis-identifying a sequence of bytes in a mission that I had written (!!!!). Ship Simulator was OK. AVG was defective.

As they hadn't corrected it three weeks later, I wiped AVG and got Norton 2009 which is so much better than it has been for some years. No problems since.
