Title: Drunk skipper. Broken gas platform
Post by: Stuart2007 on August 08, 2007, 15:55:56
Anyone heard about the skipper who smacked into a gas platform off the Anglia (GB) coast. Only a small platform, unmanned. Only a small boat, unsober.

Apparently he was 4 times over the legal limit...

HOW when the North Sea is so big did he manage to find something so small to hit?

He refused to leave the wreck and had to be taken off by force... No doubt he didn't want to leave his Vodka behind.

Was he on the bridge on his own? If not, was everyone else drunk too?

Nope, didn't heard of this before
A few years ago it was an accident with the staten island ferry in New York City and he was drunk to :o

BTW , doesn't it have to be at least two persons on the bridge (that's how it is in sweden though)

cheers

I bet Swedish law requires you to be sober too!  :D

That depends on the circumstances. Rutine, traffic and visibility are factors to take into consideration. On board most merchant vessels the mate is alone on the bridge during daylight whereas he is joined by a lookout during nighttime.

If the master of a ship is so blind drunk that he can't see a gas platform do you really think he's going to care about the rules on manning a bridge? ;)

I know there was a story of a well known British ferry that had a sizeable percentage of the (non navigation) crew drunk- there was a story in the papers, and I believe it because I had been on it so much and got o know many of the crew.

But I think incidents like that are VERY rare and most large ships have very good safety standards. And sober skippers.
