Title: Another Ship Sank
Post by: LukeL on September 06, 2009, 20:58:16
A Ship from the Great Lakes has sunk, and If I'm not mistaken its the first one to sink(not ground) since the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975

9/6 The Algoport broke in half and sank overnight in heavy seas while under tow to China. The vessel was encountering rough seas from Tropical Storm Dujuan that had passed near the vessel's position.  The tow was about one week away from her destination and the Port sank in approximately 5,000 metres of water.

The tug Atlantic Hickory managed to cut the tow wire before the vessel sank, and there are no injuries reported in the accident. While the Algoport did have some fuel oil onboard to power its generators, the fuel is contained in the bunker tanks with all vents closed as a requirement of the tow. The tug reported that no signs of pollution or debris were evident after the vessel's sinking.

The Algoport was being towed to Chengxi Shipyard to have a new forebody attached over the winter.

Wait, did it sink in the Great Lakes or the ocean?

It sank in the Ocean on its way to China to be rebuilt (a new forebody was going to be added)

so technically the Edmund Fitzgerald is still the last freighter to sink on the great lakes, but if acknowledging ships that were still in service, then this ship was the first to sink since the Fitz

You mean first laker to sink since the Fitz? I can name several ships that sank after the Fitz did...for example Oceanos, Explorer, and others.

Must of been pretty rough...

Just out of curiosity, is this the one?

I meant Great Lakes freighter, it was built and served on the Great Lakes built in Collingwood, ON, and registered in Sault Ste. Marie, ON

there have been other lakers that have sank in the ocean, but they were on their way to be scrapped, so they didn't matter what happened
, but the Algoport was going to be rebuilt with no intentions of be scrapped, or in this case sunk.
