Title: New Person on Board
Post by: kirkmyster on August 06, 2009, 13:45:04
Hello all. I am new to Ship Simulator so bear with me.  I am trying to learn the rules of the road.  Trying to understand the proper way of going around/through areas with buoys.  I am in the area of New York heading North when I see the buoys what is the proper way of travel?   Same question but now heading South?  If anyone could sum up for me I would be grateful.  I have learn the one rule Red-Right-Returning but some cases that does not apply.  Thanks again for any help.

Welcome to the forum Kirk!

I think usually keep to the right of the river, and stay within the area marked with the bouys. The bouys usually mark shallow water outside them although I could be wrong of course :)

Hi kirkmyster,
Try looking at this:- http://www.sailtrain.co.uk/Buoyage/lateral_marks.htm  I think you would find all you need to know here. Just remember that in the USA, the buoyage is different from most of the rest of the world. However it is all here. In New York harbour the sea is to the south, so that regulates the way the buoys are placed.

Hi there!

Welcome to the forum.

As you may know, in different areas of the world, we have two different areas of buoyage. A, and B.

This is shown on the map below:

To explain this, take a look at Ballast's topic, he's at sea at the moment, but his topic is there for you to look at http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,13434.0.html

If you have any more questions, don't hesitate in asking!

Hope to see you around!

Kind Regards,
Jack.

You'll surely get the hang of it soon, always do! We were all new to it at one time!

As I always say, if you have any more questions, just ask!

Jack.

OK.  Let me see if I have it right?  Anytime I have a red buoy directly in my path I should make sure it passes to my right?  If I see a green buoy directly in my path I should make sure it passes to my left?  Is that right?   But if that is the case once again look at the New York Harbor map.  They have a red buoy smack in the middle if you are heading southery.  Then what?  If you head north well that is another question.  So confused. :-\

Adding on...Look at Robbins Reef when should the red buoys be to the port side?  Sorry I seem a little annoying about this.  Catch ya all later.
