She's not a liner, she's a cruise ship. Please don't get them mixed up. The day they build another liner will be a miracle.
She's not that large to be honest compared to the new RCI ship Oasis of the Seas, and according to the Wikipedia article she's still under construction yet she's due to have her maiden voyage at the end of the July, wow they have some work to do!

I don't know where you got July, Wikipedia says she is due for her maiden voyage on December 1, 2009.

Shame they don't make liners anymore....Those were the days of real ships.

Take the SS France, SS United States, QE2:

They shouldn't of gotten rid of QE2 either, she's one of the last of her kind left.

Jack.

...and is a shell of her former self, and is really showing her signs of age! I think that eventually, QM will be scrapped, or at least kept off limits to the public, only for exterior viewing.

Yeah I reckon you're right, they'll probably keep her off limits to public whilst they spend millions of dollars to try and keep her alive. They're doing the exact same thing to the Tower of Pisa, it has been off limits to the public for the last hundred years whilst they try to correct her stability.

whats the difference between a liner and a cruise ship? well i know that a cruise ship is basically a passenger ship.

From Wikipedia:

"An ocean liner is a ship designed to transport people from one seaport to another along regular long-distance maritime routes according to a schedule. Liners may also carry cargo, mail, and may sometimes be used for other purposes (e.g., for pleasure cruises or as troopships).

Cargo vessels running to a schedule are sometimes referred to as liners.[1] The category does not include ferries or other vessels engaged in short-sea trading, nor dedicated cruise ships where the voyage itself, and not transportation, is the prime purpose of the trip. Nor does it include tramp steamers, even those equipped to handle limited numbers of passengers. Some shipping companies refer to themselves as "lines" and their container ships, which often operate over set routes according to established schedules, as "liners".

Ocean liners are usually strongly built with a high freeboard to withstand rough seas and adverse conditions encountered in the open ocean, having large capacities for fuel, victuals, and other stores for consumption on long voyages."

To backup what Jack said, look at the differences in the bow in particular on these two ships:

Queen Mary 2:

Long bow with bridge and superstructure far back and another level if you like half way down the bow to stop very large waves damaging the super structure. Also there are no balconies on the front there. :)

Carnival ship:

Short bow with bridge pretty far forward balconies etc on the front of the super structure.

I read somewhere that the standard thickness of metal in a cruise ship's bow it 15mm. Where as on QM2's bow it is around 28mm and I think more in places.

That should sum it up :)

I watched a documentry about the QM2. The bow is designed in a way that it can withstand even the worst seas the atlantic could throw at it. As the QM2 has to go to A and B and can't stop en route to take cover from storms like cruise ships can on a cruise that go from A to B to C to D e.t.c.

Also the hull thickness is to make the hull very strong and again, withstand the rough seas..

The builders even painted the QM2 in such a way that anti-corrosion and rust is kept to a minimum and the QM2 will need less paint maintenance. Cunard can't afford to dry dock the QM2 to refresh the paint all the time and the Cunard likes to have their Queen as good looking as they could get her... Just imagine how much paint and time that is required to paint the QM2..

I sae the other day that they made a model of the hull before building her and testing her in a messive tank with waves to scale etc. Even in hurricane seas hardly any water spilled over the bow and she cut through it nicely. Amazing I think :)

Yes they did, they went through a couple of model hulls.. The first couple of model hulls they made didn't work out very well so the QM2 designer who is a liner enthusiastic had to redesign a few factors with the hull like the bulb.

Yeah I saw a programme with him on it once, he was saying that the  I think it's called a breakwater on the bow (the one I said to stop large waves) was originally part of the design for the Normandie so he used it for QM2. Interesting :)

i dont understand why they couldnt make the celebrity class ships more pretty, they look a bit ugly in my opinion-too bitty and i dont like the stern. at least its not as ugly as Norwegian Epic! ;D

but RCI have always managed to make massive ships look good, oasis of the seas looks good aswell, dont undertsand why others cant do the same but, as long as they are good at what they do they can still be fine ships.

although none are as good as the SS Normandie, when real ships of beauty existed, ah, pure beauty...........
