Hi guys,
Usually being in the industry I'm in I manage to sort out fairly technical problems myself, however this particular problem has me well and truly stumped.
I recently had to reinstall windows over a previous windows vista installation. As some of you may know you can overwrite your previous installation by moving the most important files (such as users files and program files) to a folder named windows.old. The problem I'm having is relocating my previous Microsoft Outlook PST folder which is a rather large folder and should not be a problem to find.
I've been into my previous installation, C:\windows.old\User\AppData\Microsoft\Outlook and have found a PST file, but it remains blank and does not contain the emails I would like to retrieve.
I do however still have the program files which outlook used to run on my old installation - however it will not work as I'm on a new installation but is there ANY possible way to find where my old PST file was located on my OLD outlook installation?
This is a very important issue, although I would very much appreciate any help you may be able to provide. I realise this is a long shot being a game forum but I'm rather at the end of my tether and really need to find my old PST folder.

Hi Adam,
The usual place for your pst, as you probably know, is:
C:\Users\your name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook (in Vista 64-bit).
If you can't find it in a similar place in the old installation, I can only suggest doing a full (advanced) search for *.pst. Be sure to check the box "Include non-indexed, hidden, and system files".

Thanks for your prompt reply! :)
However, my system is still indexing all files on both of my hard drives so it's taking a long time to search. I did give it a try earlier, but nothing came up but the emtpy PST file on my old system. I'm guessing I must have moved my PST file to somewhere else on a earlier system (when I used XP Pro) back a couple of years.

OK. A couple of things to consider when searching for it:
When you search for the pst file, make sure that you have set it to include hidden and system files.
Perhaps it is not in the windows.old folders, if you moved it.

Precisely what I was thinking, although I thought I'd post here and see what others said. I'm waiting for my computer to reindex all of the files I have on both drives, before I perform a search.

You can pause the indexing and then use the search companion, which is just the old style search function (I have the new one disabled. It usually is of no help).

Blimy, that's a few files! So how do I proceed to search with the old companion, rather than the new search index. When I search it seems to keep crashing for some reason, never used to :-\

I hven't got Vista booted up anywhere at the moment, so this is from memory, but when you call up the search program there should be an option soemwhere to use search companion, I think.

You can just type into the box just above the Start button, and then click Search Tools on the toolbar to set up to search non-indexed, hidden, etc. as in my other post.

Still, when it searches the window automatically closes for some odd reason when searching for files for a while. Almost as if I closed the window.

That shouldn't happen. Trouble is, the cause could be any of a million things. With things like that, people quite often end up re-installing Windows before it gets fixed (and then they have some other wierdness!).

Well this is a very new installation Terry and I've never really had any troubles with anything like thI return the window has vanished. Very odd... ???
