Title: Calculating a ship's speed.
Post by: firestar12 on June 01, 2009, 22:33:56
Does anyone here know of any equations to calculate a ship's top speed?

Calculations...no how to tell yes
you can look at the speedometer  ::)
or look at its speed relative to something you know around it   ;)
or just by looking at it you should be able to givve an estimate but things on water look faster than on land

I meant by looking at it's design Matt... ::)

i wouldn't think there is, thats like looking at a very tall building and saying its X number of feet tall, like matt said i think thats what speedometers are for ;)

I wouldn't think its 100% Possible to be able to tell how fast your boat can go. Since, it mainly depends on your "Hull speed" too, and design of it.

For example, our boat (Colvic Watson), Mary Elizabeth (One that's up for sale :-\) Will produce 8 knots max. Whereas, say, take a boat of the same weight, but with different hull type, it could go faster, or it could go slower. And really, I can't see how you can predict the speed from the HP Either, if you have a heavy boat with a non-displacement hull, its going to be different to one with a semi, or full. Unless that software takes all this into account.

That's my personal opinion anyway.

Jack.

Perhaps less expensive than Swiftcraft...

Just hire a math wiz. I'm sure there's an equation out there that can calculate top speed of a ship by looking at hull shape and dynamics and engine performance. Oh great all those big words are putting me to sleep...  :sleepy:
