Title: Coming Soon: Red Jet 5; Going, Going... Red Jets 1 and 2
Post by: The Ferry Man on May 10, 2009, 20:57:12
It has been announced that Red Funnel have purchased another catamaran, similar to Red Jet 3, called Bo Hengy, for their Southampton-Cowes passenger Route. Following on from previous vessels, she will be named Red Jet 5.

The Red Jets 1 and 2, though, have been sold, and are now named CM Jet 1 and CM Jet 2.

So shouldn't red jets 3,4 and 5 be the new Red Jets 1, 2 and 3? sad to see to Red Funnel catamarans be sold to CM. I think the Pride of Hull and Rotterdam will be sold away when new P&O flagship ferries come. Sad for ships to be sold and could be scrapped. But good for the red jets 1 and 2.

If you read the press releases from P&O, you'd find that the new P&O ships coming will be replacing some P&O ferries on the Dover > Calais route.

The Pride of Hull and Rotterdam are rather new still, 2001 I think? I don't think in this economic climate P&O would sell those two vessels.

Pride of Hull and Rotterdam certainly won't be going anywhere for some time. If it will be any, it will be the Pride Of Bruges, and Pride Of York, they are starting to age a bit now.

Shame about the Red Jets being sold, but I guess sometimes we have to move on.

Jack.

I'll add to the last 2 comments

Pride of Hull and Pride of Rotterdam costed £90,000,000 each. They also require puprose built loading facilites on the Humber (side entrance for cars, must be costly), and they are very new (2001). They are still operating on full capacity some days, and I really cannot see them going anywhere for another 15/20 years. Even when that year comes, P&O have a habit of sending the ex Rotterdam-Hull ships to the Zeebrugge route, where they stay for even longer (If they still have life in them, why chuck them away?)

And I still think Pride of York and Pride of Bruges have another 10 years in them (But in this financial crisis, anything could happen).

But anyway, have they got a render of RJ5 yet? Who did they sell 1 & 2 to?

At least Red Jet 4 wasn't sold, or VStep would replace her with RJ3 or 5 in Ship Sim 2010. But sad to hear to Red Funnel Red Jets to be sold away. I think in a future Google Earth, I will  try to find the 2 in the Caspian Sea.

PLEASE, stop speculating.. Where on earth did you read that they would replace RJ4 if she was sold?

I was about to reply myself, but I restrained myself from doing it.

But I agree with your post whole heartly... Matt, please stop posting pure speculation in a factual way. :-\ :sleepy:

I see the design of the RJ5, she looks really cool! Perfect for Red Jet and Red Funnel Ferries. :captain:

So shouldn't red jets 3,4 and 5 be the new Red Jets 1, 2 and 3?...

Now that would be annoying for VStep.  :P
But I can see your point, it will be confusing for people. It's like going from calling a ship Queen Elizabeth 2 to calling another one just Queen Elizabeth.

And really confusing for the people to know what they were called when RJs 1 and 2 were here. So now I say the names will stay.
