Hi guys, I searched the forum and I couldn't find any favorite ship horn topics. So, what ship horn is your favorite? (In the game please, if you want to, you can share the real world but please share your in game one first). Mine I would have to say would be either the Pride of Rotterdam's or Titanic's.
Please note: I am talking about the horns made in the addon pack by Terry and Fred.
-
Since the default horns are shared by a lot of vessels, and there are really only 4 or 5 different ones by default, I reckon you might also be referring to the horn addon pack then, perhaps? Might be an important note, if you want to compare horns, wether or not it is the default one or not. :)
Mine would be all of them (addon horns) really... heh.. Each one suits the vessel it's used for, in my opinion. As such they're all perfect. ;D
(hint of bias here? hmm.. dunno...)

For me, the Sherpa's horn is my favourite ;D
Jack.

I agree with Fred.
I am of course absolutely unbiased and totally impartial when I vote for all of the add-on horn sounds. Especially a couple that haven't been relesed yet.
-
I love the POR horn, and Terry did an excellent job in re-creating it
This is the real one if it interests you;

Mine would be all of the addon horns ;D

Gotta love the whistle from a wreck ;D
If only they had the recording of a replica, blown at full pressure....

I will send the fiver to you shortly! ;D
-
I like all the horn AND radio sounds Terry!
£10 please
Jack.

I personally like the Titanic's triple-tone whistles (horn). Nothing beats good old steam.
-
That sound wasn't made with steam, to be honest, but air pressure alone... But I do agree, there's something about those that you just can't beat.. steam ór air.. :P

Are you kidding me, air pressure horns sound like hell! I know so because my town I live in has a fake steamship (a barge) called Wenonah II. Even her horn isn't as good as the RMS Segwun's.
-
I mean the horn of the Titanic, even sounds good with air pressure. And since that's how they blew the refurbished horn, and the recording of it is the horn that's in the game, there's no steam involved at all.. yet you still picked it as the best sounding. So it's self evident that air pressure doesn't always sound bad.
:P

Well, it does somewhat, but I still think it sounds better with steam.
EDIT: Are you saying that VSTEP used the real Titanic's horn recovered from the seabed in SS08?
-
Nah, no crawling back, you said Titanic's was best, and that nothing beats. So you thought that it was a steam sound.. And why would you not, it's not thát much different. Steam will have a different density and the temperature will make a difference, but unltimately I think it's more about the whistle itself, not the steam or air. So the tone and volume and 'body' may very a bit, but a good whistle will probably sound good either way. :P ;)
But since none of us here have ever heard her for real, and you can thus also not make that distinction, it's close enough for me, this way. That's why there's no replacement for Titanic's horn in the addon pack. Terry and I agreed that it was good enough, since it is the real deal.
So yep, the original whistle, that they recovered and refurbished, and used that time, that sound is the one that is sampled in the game, to the best of my knowledge.
-
I believe that the Titanic sound in the simulator was recorded when the original horn was restored.
It would therefore be composed of somewhat thinner material after being submersed in salt water for such a length of time.
They passed compressed air through it, but at nowhere near the sort of pressure that the original steam would have been applied (for fear of blowing the restored and treasured horn to pieces).
Nevertheless, as every sounding of the original would have been different (different steam pressure, different air temperature, different temperature of the various component parts of the horn, different denisty of air and so on), so there is no such thing as "one correct sound". There was a wide spectrum of sounds that would have been heard.

That's why I posted that earlier in this thread ;D
I hear there are a few replicas around....
-
Though, are they accurate? Maybe me or you should ask the TRMA about this.
-
Geez all of the controversey over a titanic horn ::) hehe well my faveourite horn is
POR RJ4 and wll I like a lot of em great job Fred and Terry
-
Ta, Matt.
-
Haha...I have to agree with Matt too Terry. You are one of the best (And very few) Sound engineers that I have ever met!
-
It is another way of saying thank you.
-
According to Fred (I hope you do not mind me sharing this, Fred) He said no one knows who started it id I recall correctly.
-
Ok, PSOT. Remember, this is not small talk.
-
Ah, right! So I think "Ta" is a short saying that's comming from ~ "Tank you" ("thank", pronounced without h) There (http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/dictionary/DictionaryResults.aspx?refid=561508481)
I'm pronouncing "thank you" as "fank you" (fenk you), however some people says it like "sank you" (or "senk you")...
Well, as the only one here who uses it, and it is used a great deal here in England, let me explain.
Dunno.
Oh, all right then
It is a very old expression. (The evolution of words is such that very short words tend to be very old as they don't change much).
Here's one explanation of the brymological roots of the word.
The word may be a result of the heavy Scandanavian influence on the English language.
The Danish word for "thanks" is "tak". Over time, the "k" got dropped. Probably in the time between 1,000 A.D and 1100 A.D, when the Norman influence was at its zenith, (but who can tell) because of the way we believe that words were pronounced during the period Old English and Middle English were spoken.
In case you aren't aware, it is pronounced so it rhymes with "tar" or "car", but the "r" sound is very slightly shortened compared to the word "tar".
The English language is divided into three periods:
Old English, also called Anglo-Saxon, from the 400s through 1066.
Middle English from 1066 to about the 1400s and
Modern English from the late 1400s onward.
Example (from monastic records, as there is little else that spans the period):
Old English
Uren Fader †at art in heofnas
Sic gehalyed †in noma
To cymeð þin ric
Middle English
Our Fadir that art in heuenes
Halewid be thi name
Thi Kingdom comme to
Early Modern English
Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come

I already asked that sort of question to the TRMA, firestar, and they had said there were a few replicas around, if memory serves.
If all else fails, one could always try building one....
Or two ;)
-
Sounds like something I might be interested in doing. Lets not go off topic any more right now. ;)

My post was more on topic than the post above it ;D

Ok, I just don't want us getting in trouble for going off topic. :-\
-
Whatever! Back on topic!
My favorite horn sound is the Pride of Rotterdam's....good job Terry and Fred ;)

I like the SS United States horn. I have a (not GREAT, but good) recording of it. It needs lots of sound work from someone like Terry or Fred. Maybe I should post a sapmle of it in that SSUS topic.
