Title: Wind???
Post by: CarlisleII on March 26, 2009, 21:37:31
Does wind really affect ships?

I had the Red Eagle sitting in the middle of the Solent harbor with the wind all the way maxed out and it was hitting the ship completly broad-side and it didnt move. ???

It has no affect on the ships in SS 2008. Only in SS 2008 pro. ;)

Looking forward to do course correction with drift in the next SS standard version

Are you sure about that? (don't get me wrong, I'm sure you might be!). Just I seem to forever have problems getting big ships to stay in one place close to the docks for long periods of time if there is a strong wind... I always assumed it was the wind affecting them?! Perhaps I'm just a rubbish pilot?! :)

I am sure. It might just be the waves affecting you.

Hi frammy7,
I think it is the shallow water alongside the dock. Often you will see the ship list as she moves away.

A good indicator for that is the depth under the hull.

Bear in mind that just because there is a metre or two under the hull, it doesn't mean that the rudders, propellors etc aren't stuck in the mud. That makes the vessel list, or even get stuck.

Hi Terry,

There seems to be some confusion or inconsistency in the depths shown on the HUD for bow & stern: In some manuals it is the depth below water surface, not what a bow or stern 'ducer would give.

Marty

Mmmm, interesting that wind doesn't affect non-moving vessels in SS08.  I never even thought of that.

Most likely the depths are given from sensors installed on the lowest point of bow, and the same thing for the stern..(i don't know if rudder and propellor's has been taken as lowest point but..)
This is called, UKC --> Under Kiel Clearance.

What exactly do you mean by “non-moving vessels”? If you mean those ships that are part of the environment—like trees—wind wouldn’t. Static ships, however, are moving ships that can’t be driven like player ships. They have dynamics that allow them to be towed. Wind would be expected to affect them as well as player ships, if that feature gets implemented in SS 2010.

Non-moving vessel(s) are: player vessel(s) (if engines are turned off and not anchored), non-player vessels (stopping for player ship if possible), etc.

Is that better?

Wind, in SS 2008, affects them in the same way that it affects those vessels if they are moving.

I don't really notice when I'm sailing.

That's because the wind does not affect the ship, moving or otherwise. Not in SS08..  :)

The only effect of wind in 2008 is on the waves. This, in turn, can have a small secondary effect upon the ship—such as causing her to fall off her intended heading.
SS 2010 will have a very different sea model. If it is similar to that in Pro, there will be a direct action upon ships.
