I'm sorry if this is a wrong post, or in a wrong place, or is a wrong 'anything', but I'm one of those dreaded newbies arriving on the scene. I won't be offended if this is moved, deleted or becomes the centre of a point-and-laugh discussion! ;D
I don't know whether it's likely that the developers pop in here, but I hope they do because I just want to say what a superb game Ship Simulator 2008 is! The graphics are sublime, totally fluid and realistic, and, unusually, they run totally smooth on my PC - even at the highest possible settings. The missions are hugely varied and a lot of fun. But moreover, the interface has obviously been incredibly well thought out. It feels like this has been designed by a simulator fan rather than a team of coders! Doesn't matter if we want fine manual control over a vessel with the keyboard, make it real with using the graphically depicted controls in the bridge or to simply lock the controls in place and go off for a wander. Of course, there's also the ability to show and hide information panels, and they're all laid out very discreetly so as not to hamper gameplay. Finally, the ability to download other players' missions as if part of the game menu structure is a really nice touch too, and makes the game feel as though it has endless content. These might seem such small things, but I like simulator games, and I appreciate when something has been done so very thoughtfully and thoroughly.
So, thanks! (now awaiting the newbie chastisement for pointless postings) :P

Hi.
We' ve already met in Technical Support, otherwise I'd say "Welcome to the Forum". No problem with you rpost.
You've already spoken to at least two of the people involved in the development of Ship Simulator, without being aware of that fact. ;)
Glad you like it. ;D
PS I see you like MSTS as well. I've developed content for that for many years.

Heh! Then I'm certainly glad my post is an 'I love this fantastic title' rather than 'Pile of doo-doo'. Now I just have to live down the fact that, despite this thread, my first posting was to whinge about a non-working mission - to the developers! ;D
Thanks very much for the useful links!

Ahoy BadWhippet,
Although Terry said it in another, typicall Marmited way, I also welcome You to this Forum.
It's really refreshing reading a post from a 'Newbie' which is not filled with complaints, remarks "How better it could be" or so, but sheer a praise for the developpers.
I'm in no way related to the developpers, but when I where, I would give You one or another Add-On for the SS08 for free, sheer out of gratitude. But beeing not, You'll have to do with the FREE tips Terry just gave to You.
Regards
Aad
BTW, I don't know if You've seen it, but on the Profile section of this Forum is a free Add-On for registered users. It's the Heavy Duty Vessel Jumbo Javelin. And since You are registered You're in Title to download it.
-
Hi Aad! Many thanks for the welcome! My greedy little eyes spotted the Jumbo Javelin yesterday when I signed up and it's my absolute favourite (and the cause of my first post here which WAS to whine about something not working)!
I don't usually ooze enthusiasm in forums about games, but every new discovery I'm making in Ship Simulator 2008 is something else I wish other simulators included too. It is SO very well done.

Hi again, BadWhippet.
There are some free add-on packs as well. There is a horn add-on that replaces the default ones that came with thegame. For some reason, I think the replacements are quite good.
There is also a set of about 12 hours of replacement radio sounds. The default ones do get tiresome after a short time. Again, for some reason, I think the replacement are quite good as well.
You can access these from the front page of the site http://www.shipsim.com.
On creators Forum (click the link in my signature) you can get updated vessel dynamics as well.
All for free!

Thanks for these, Terry! I love the Solent variety of radios especially - used to hang around the Portsmouth naval docks constantly and brings back a lot of great memories! ;D
-
Its nice to hear that you enjoy the game very much! :)
Do you have Multiplayer, yes? We have great fun online with all of the people that are registered on the froum here. I'm a regular on Multiplayer, along with many other Dutch Players, German players, English players, people from all over the world :o ;D
Jack :)

Thanks for these, Terry! I love the Solent variety of radios especially - used to hang around the Portsmouth naval docks constantly and brings back a lot of great memories! ;D
As I live in Selsey and have my boat at Chichester, those radio sounds are very relevant to me, also ;D
I am now working on a set for Rotterdam and New York Environments.

Someone has definitely now :P :D

Well, I was going to start my own thread, but since this one is already here, I'll just add to it.
I've had my eye on the Ship Simulator series for quite some time now, but no stores around here (Bismarck, ND) ever carried it, and I was hesitant to order from overseas, so I always passed--(this was regarding the first version, years ago).
Then, a few weeks ago, I thought to check on Youtube to get some actual gameplay footage. After watching a few videos, I was sold. I never even downloaded the demo or anything. What I saw was good enough.
My 2008 SE arrived in the mail a few days ago, and I am just pleased as punch! Right now, I'm still just messing around with it in the free roaming areas, but I did try the first mission out, and while I have failed that mission 4 times now, I have had a blast doing so, and learn a little more each time.
My very first sim was Microsoft Space Simulator back in 1994. I still run it on my old 486, and still have fun with it. I used to buy a lot of sims in the old days, but sadly I was won over by the first-person shooter. Now that I'm getting older, and shooters ain't what they used to be, I find my attention turning back to sims again. I want something I can dabble with for hours on end, and Ship Simulator is fitting that bill perfectly.
It runs perfectly at 1920 x 1200 on my Q6600, 6 gigs ram, 9800GT/512, Vista Premium 64 bit. I get around 35 frames per second, sometimes a lot more, so that's plenty good! It's beautiful, and I look forward to sitting down with it each night after a very stressful day at work. It is very relaxing, and takes me to a good place.
Well done, guys. And I can't wait to see what the future holds for this sim!
By the way, the Netherlands rocks! No one around here has heard of Within Temptation, but I 'discovered' them on Youtube last year, and now own all their albums--Black Symphony is amazing. I suppose now everyone here will tell me how much they suck. :-\
Anyway, best wishes for the future of this amazing sim! I'll be watching.

Welcome to the game and the forum, Giles..
Hope you have lots of fun (as we all do.. ;D
-
Hi Giles, and welcome.
You'll find heaps of free stuff, as well as paid-for add-ons.
I run "Creators Forum", where we develop new missions and other stuff. It's free to join and download the missions etc. There are also some useful manuals there, which are well worth reading.
If you haven't come across them yet, there are free add-on radio sounds and horn sounds available. Go to http://www.shipsim.com/downloads/patches.php to see the links.
If you check your profile, you can download the Jumbo Javelin and some associated missions for free, as a registered member of the Forum. (You just need to register your profile on this forum first).
