Hi everyone
maybe it's a very stupid question but I need your help. I was thinking of taking a tattoo (when I get old enough) of a god who protects sailors. (I want to go to sea)
But now is the question: which god protects the sailors? is it poseidon or palaemon or maybe leucothea?
here is a website which I founded: http://www.theoi.com/Pontios/Palaimon.html
maybe a stupid topic but thanks anyway for your help :P

I always thought it was Poseidon, and in the film poseidon (2006 version) the 'cruise director' guy says something about Poseidon being the protector of the sailors of the sea or something like that. But Im only 90% sure so dont fully count on that.

Please note: this is not intended to indicate any religious leanings of any sort. It is intended as historical research.
St. Elmo is the patron saint of sailors.
Cernunnos (the "Horned one"), is believed to have been worshipped by sailors from the Gallic Parisii tribe (from whom Paris got its name) in the 1st century AD.
Thor (after whom "Thursday" - Thoor's Day - is named) is the old Scandinavian God of the Sky and Thunder. A kindly God of the common people, including farmers and sailors.

Nearly right Terry, Thor are only a Norwegian God ;)
Thor is the Norse (Old Norway) god of thunder. He is a son of Odin and Jord, and one of the most powerful gods. He is married to Sif, a fertility goddess. His mistress is the giantess Jarnsaxa ("iron cutlass"), and their sons are Magni and Modi and his daughter is Thrud. Thor is helped by Thialfi, his servant and the messenger of the gods.
Thor was usually portrayed as a large, powerful man with a red beard and eyes of lightning. Despite his ferocious appearance, he was very popular as the protector of both gods and humans against the forces of evil. He even surpassed his father Odin in popularity because, contrary to Odin, he did not require human sacrifices. In his temple at Uppsala he was shown standing with Odin at his right side. This temple was replaced by a Christian church in 1080.
The Norse believed that during a thunderstorm, Thor rode through the heavens on his chariot pulled by the goats Tanngrisni ("gap-tooth") and Tanngnost ("tooth grinder"). Lightning flashed whenever he threw his hammer Mjollnir. Thor wears the belt Megingjard which doubles his already considerable strength. His hall is Bilskirnir, which is located in the region Thrudheim ("place of might"). His greatest enemy is Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent. At the day of Ragnarok, Thor will kill this serpent but will die from its poison. His sons will inherit his hammer after his death.
Donar is his Teutonic equivalent, while the Romans see in him their god Jupiter. Thursday is named after him.

all i've learned is that poseidon is the god of the seas :-\

And Saint Nicholas is also a patron saint of sailors. (As in Sinterklaas, the Dutch festivity and the origin of Santa Claus)
Maritiem, I don't think a tattoo of 'Sinterklaas" is very butch. ;D

Hi everyone
maybe it's a very stupid question but I need your help.
maritiem
Ahoy maritiem,
First of all: There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.
About your question: almost all answers to your question are right, but there is another Greek God of the sea. TRITON, the son of Poseidon (holding a Trident in his right hand) and Amphritrite. He had no legs, but a fishtail. He was blowing a large, twisted scallop, the Tritonsshell, to controll the waves.
And, off course, there is (was) a Roman counterpart: Neptunes.
Regards
Aad

Disagree... Also worshiped in ancient Britain, Ireland, and all across what is now Scandanavia. There was of course, no such thing as Norway or Denmark or Sweden in those days. Plus in Nomandy (Norseman's Land), in what was then Gaul.
My wife studies these things. I bought her some thousand year old jewellery for Christmas, made by "Vikings". One of them was a clasp with a representation of Thor on it. As she says: "You only ever give me old stuff"...

Hi
Neptune was not a Poseidon's Roman counterpart, but the same God.
When Romans conquered ancient Greece, they impressed from Hellenic civilization and as the time passed they adopted the philosophy and the Greek Gods changing the Greek names by Latin. So Zeus or Dias (king of Olymbian Gods) became Jupiter, Poseidon became Neptune, Hermes (God of commerce) became Mercury, Athena (patron of ancient Athens city) became Minerva, Aphrodite (Goddess of love) became Venus, etcetera-etcetera.
Best regards
