Title: Long time since update
Post by: Nyrum1x3 on January 09, 2009, 16:20:50
Don't know if this topic fits in here or small talk.
I'm not really sure, but it seems it's been some times since last update.
Anyone knows if/when there will be another?
I think it's about time we get some changes to SS08 (better AI, higher waves, better controls (maybe?).
Looking forward to positive replies.

Hmm... well I don't care much for "I think it's about time.." type remarks, to be honest..
Those seem to assume that delevopers are sitting around doing nothing. Whilst the contrary is of course true.

But I reckon you might have heard of SS10? It's being done.. better things are coming.  ;)

There might be bugs in SS08 that still get fixed, but I am pretty sure, with SS10 under development now, they will not add any major changes to SS08 anymore.

The big steps will be taken in/with the next game version.  ;D

Fred

p.s. moved to small talk. The general lobby of the SS08 board is for demo questions only.

I dont see the point of any updates anyway since SS10 is coming.

But Im sure SS10 will be brilliant, and I agree with Fred, Vstep must be really hard at work right now, good for them! what a great company!

One point:
Some might want to save money due to this financial crisis all over the world.
Other may want to keep to SS08.
Even if there's a new game in a series coming, doesn't mean older version is left behind.

Post by: Agent|Austin on January 09, 2009, 22:24:39
Microsoft no longer has updates for windows XP, or Flight Simulator 2000. Should I go complain to them also?

I guess I should go ask for a patch for ss06 too cause I have it.

You may not have noticed, but the "financial crisis" also hits companies, VSTEP doesn't have money or man power to create patches for an older version and try and create a new game.

I personly think that Vstep has been doing a great job with giving out Updates.

And Vstep are busy enough with SS10 :D

Keep up the great work Vstep

I was wondering.

How much would you be wiling to pay for this update you want, Nyrum1x3?

No reason why it should be free, of course.

Not in terms of new features.

XP is now on the "bugs and security issues only" part of the cycle, I think. You can of course pay money and buy support and enhancements from Microsoft for XP. But they are vey expensive.

Let's look at some others in the market:

Try waiting for any add-ons or patches for Fifa 00,01,02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 or 08. You'll wait a long time.

Trainz of course make you buy a new version of their simulator each year if you want enhancements.

Oblivion and Morrowind had bug-fix patches and you had to pay a lot of money for any of the expansion packs.

Train simulator had a small patch which fixed a few bugs and gave you a couple of minor extras. Everything else had/has to be paid for.

Anyone see the trend?

That's right about xp bugs and security updates are on win update  and trainz are update the game with service packs into the new version are coming, like trainz 04 and o6 are no longer update to, but now wee are finises with the 2009 world version finish and now soon will the 2009 Engineering version bee out, wee still beta test this

"relished" means "liked". But I think Captain Bluebeard's spill-chuckler put the wrong word in.

As in "Terry really relished the idea of having a free version of Ship Simulator PRO brought to his house by 12 beautiful blonde Spambot who would install it on his PC for him."

Post by: TerryRussell on January 10, 2009, 17:59:39
And it really doesn't seem very long since we had the last FREE update. Jumbo Javelin was released a very short time ago.

Before that, Elbe and Furie were released in the Shipyard in the Autumn.

Before that, you had Ocean Star and other ships via the Shipyard.

And it isn't very long ago that Fred and I released the horn add-on pack and the radio add-on pack.

I am working on the Rotterdam and USA radio packs right now. So more SS2008 updates to come.

And the number of new things that  know about for PRO and SS2010 versions is terrific!

So what's this about "Long time since update"? That's just wrong.
Title: Re: Long time since update
Post by: Nyrum1x3 on January 10, 2009, 18:05:22
No ship sim without ships.
New ships is NOT updates, just add-ons

I was mostly thinking about the AI.
Sometimes, when i chose a big ship (Vermaas, Latitude etc.) in a port, it seems that the AI din't know i'm there, they just continue.
Well, this happen some times.
Title: Re: Long time since update
Post by: TerryRussell on January 10, 2009, 18:14:30
Those are all updates. It's just that you want something else, as well as all the other free stuff that has been issued.

And V1.4.2 did contain updates to AI as well as a lot of other things. That only came out a short time ago..

You didn't answer my question about how much you'd be prepared to pay for your desired updates though. What sort of sum do you have in mind?
Title: Re: Long time since update
Post by: Traddles on January 10, 2009, 18:23:03
There are now 170 custom missions on file to download and play. That probably means that SS2008 is updated about once every two or three days. If anyone gets bored, it is always a good idea to play some missions, that IS what SS2008 is actually all about. It's a shame to complain about wanting updates when there is so much to download and enjoy. I should point out perhaps that every one of these missions is totally free and has been tested carefully by unpaid  CMM's so that all players can enjoy them. I reckon that is very, very good value for anyone. To top it all off we have the most helpful and enjoyable Forum too.

Angus.
P.S. I would point out also that in reality all ships other than ones own do not always behave as they should :o It can be very scary at times, but that is why ships are required to have a  qualified watchkeeper on the bridge at all times.

Very good point Traddles, well said. Although I see a wind of arguments on the horizon of this thread, Maybe it should be locked, I think Nyrum has got the idea now. ;)
Title: Re: Long time since update

So the AI is good enough for you?
TBH, it's maybe the worst AI i have ever seen in a game.

Custom missions doesn't change the Artifical Intelligence.

And since when did customers have to pay for updates/patches?

If you not like the game/simulator stop playing or seal it then you haw ended this problem you seems to haw , easy  like that and wee haw never payed for patches or updates only for some add ones and Jumbo Javelin wee got for free

As i've stated before, a new ship is not a update/patch, only a add-on.

Anyway, it's my opinion that SS08 need a few fixes.
I don't see a reason to abandon one game for a new.
I also have some other problems, crashes, but i think is because of my DPC, so i won't include that.

And since when did customers have to pay for updates/patches?

I gave you examples above. Did you not read them?

Besides, Vstep have already given you 4 major sets of upgrades for Free. Plus the add-ons that I mentioned above. Didn't you read about those either? I mentioned some that were not ships....

Oh well. This has become a pointless discussion. Chaps, time to go and do something more fun, I think. Me, I'm developing new radio add-on sounds and a complete set of buoys for the game, with the assistance of Fred and hopefully some others.

You're right, this is pointless.
Let them keep the game with frustrating bugs.

Development on SS2008 has ended, pretty much. Why are you expecting a patch to fix the bugs in the game, when they could be spending time preventing bugs in the future game?

And can you name some of the bugs you are experiencing? Which Version are you running?
Title: Re: Long time since update
Post by: Nyrum1x3 on January 10, 2009, 23:20:02
Hmm, i don't think SS10 will be flawless when it's released, there will be some fixes after release, i'm sure that will.
It's that way with every game, or that's what i've seen.
Even some console games i've had, had bugs.

I'm running the latest version, 1.4.2, that came with the Collector's Edition.
AI drunk drives ships most of the time.
And this is the only game that makes my PC crash.
Title: Re: Long time since update
Post by: Nathan|C on January 10, 2009, 23:22:50
AI Ships are on a user created path in missions - If there is a problem with that mission, chances are it has been reported. In Free-Roam the ships are all following a realistic path and whenever you cross them they will stop (That is if you have 1.4.2 (?)).

And just because it makes you PC crash doesn't mean it is a buggy game. That sounds like a problem with your computer. I have never, in my 1 year of using SS2008, experienced a computer crash with the game.

Hi PC Skippers,
Where do I find these missions? I search the www.shipsim.com and "The Shipyard" from time to time to look for such stuff.
Has anyone an idea when Vstep are planning the 2010 version, and will it be possible to buy an update for my 2008 version?

Do not apologise Wande54, as you point out not everyone is a computer whizz kid. If you open the game and go to "Custom mission" you will find a long list of missions ready for you to download. The total of 170 is now passed, there are more than that now. ;D (Open the game>Play>Custom mission). I should point out there are many of us who some would regard as "Has beens" or "old crocks" due to our age ::)

They are so, but to protect my work for pirates i haw only put a link to missions that are in this forum or in the creator forum. So thats the reason for it. It's a big job to make missions so only legal copy's of the game are a loved to download them
But in the creator forum you can download them direct and you got a exe file, only dubleclick on it and the mission install it self, Not me as made the forum, but it all us members forum, Terry Russel set it up yes, but it wee that holde it alive  :D

Good evening everyone!

Just got back from Rotterdam.

As Captain Bluebeard says, it is the work of all the Creators, Mission Reviewers and the various development teams that keeps Creators Forum the happening place that it is.

As well as over 60 missions, we are using it to develop add-ons for future updates or future versions of the game. We also use it to develop and release improvements to the various vessels. And sometimes we just sit and chat!

Everyone is welcome.  ;D

I think there was a note from Vstep before the Shipyard came on line. This was in the form of a message of intent only. I think that since then the developers have decided it is better to produce Ship Simulator 2010 rather than keep updating SS2008. I could of course be wrong, I frequently am, now I am getting older. :P

I think we can get a little suprice in shipyard or an littel update anyway. This reminds me about Ship Simulator 2006, with even the first info about Ship Simulator 2008 came out, then died SS06 completely and 70% lost absolutely desire to play and was sitting to see if it was just something new for SS08.

Vstep, do not let the game die, Its a long way until SS2010 its completed anyway :)
