Title: wild see
Post by: Ancalagon on January 07, 2009, 21:44:17
Wich ships you think would have the most difficulties on 4M high wave?

JetSki, Power Boat.

I thinkj the hovercraft would have a hard time trying to sail in 4m waves

Try sailing the Portoferraio Angel on the sea. It's almost impossible to turn in the high waves and speed is very low  ;D

the Northern Star. can't handle facing the waves and stay put that way no movement

The Herkules Atlas with a few barges attached. In the real world you would last about 15 minutes if you were lucky!

I wonder what would handle the waves the best? I would Say PoR. ;)

PoR has apparently had some tough times in reality (It is the North Sea), and the Ocean Star is built for crossing the Oceans, so they'd probably be best.

I would have said latitude or vermaas

It’s easy enough to answer, either one-at-a-time in free roam, or a bunch at once in the editor.
You need to set the wind correctly for maximum effect.

Of course, in reality it depends upon the wave period relative to the vessel’s length—and other factors that can’t be controlled in SS.

I would of thought that, but Cruise ships are not very good at crossing say the atlantic, although In calmer seas there fine ofcourse ;D

sherpa of course with that very high bow it is built to be at very low speeds in rough weather because of the towing and bouy handling

This is difficult, not easy....

We are discussing difficult ships...

The Jet Ski would actually be quite good in high waves as they will ride big waves well and some are unsinkable as they have enclosed air pockets or foam in them.
You would however get quite wet ;) lol

Perhaps the Titanic...

As the question was

Wich ships you think would have the most difficulties on 4M high wave?

I'd have to agree that Titanic would find 4M waves very challenging. Seeing that she is in several pieces on the ocean floor and mainly comprised of rust.

I thought we were talking in Shipsim?

The questioner never said that...

it might not matter if it is a reality ship or shipsim ship. so I think we could just say a really slow(big) ship is about 6 knots an hour in a 4meter wave storm and noticed it is going 0 knots an hour.

The pushboat is horrible in 4M waves.

Try the Nortern Star if you can stomach the waves in New Horizons ;D

Correct me if I'm wrong but if a ship is going 6 knots an hour it is accelerating. Is it like saying it was going 6 mph per hour?

Person, I believe you are correct. Or at least was accelerating. ;)

Gentleman, please mind your choice of words. You have N(autical)m(iles) per hour and you have Knots, PERIOD . Knots per hour would be the same as wet water, or black coal, or white snow (yes I know, there is a fancy word for that, just can't remember).

Nope, Pleonasm is the correct word. BUT you gave me th push in the right direction searching for it.
Title: Re: wild see
Post by: TerryRussell on February 22, 2009, 18:04:22
Just to clarify, "knots per hour" is the same as saying "1.1 miles per hour per hour". That would in fact be a unit of acceleration, not velocity. So it isn't actually pleonasmic.

For comparison, if you fall off a tall building, you accelerate at 9.81 metres per second per second (or 32 feet per second per second, but only if you're American - that's a joke!).

Having accelerated for some 15 seconds you would achieve a velocity of... wait for it.... zero, because you've just hit the ground - second joke.

You'd be a bit daft taking a small private boat like the Marbella out into a sea with 4m waves, but the Latitude is designed for much more extreme weather.

Hmm...A vessel that would have a tough time, if your talking about real life, then a canal boat

If your talking about Ship Sim, then I would think that the Historical Yacht would have the most problems.

Jack.

Red Jet 4 and Red eagle. Funny in 4M waves watching them struggle.
