Let's see if this is a handy topic..
Here you can ask simple questions, and others can give handy tips how to solve them
For instance: I would like to know how to change a large link to a small one
Say I want to add this link to a message http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.oilpubs.com/pictures/oilpubs/articles/2/jumbo%2520%2520-%2520picture%2520of%2520similar%2520vessel.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.oilpubs.com/oso/article.asp%3Fv1%3D4960&usg=__nenvc4ifUdOwZeU3QwH1WghFaGI=&h=138&w=200&sz=9&hl=en&start=8&tbnid=0-OaiUPs_rL1NM:&tbnh=72&tbnw=104&prev=/images%3Fq%3Djumbo%2Bjavelin%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D21%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN
How do I change it so it reads "here" instead..?
-
Hi Salty,
You can do that by using the following combination of tags and text:
[ url=adress here]text to display here (no spaces in the tags, but otherwise they will not show up here)
so, that could be:
[ url=http://www.shipsim.com]The Ship Simulator Website
So if I remove the spaces behind the first bracket and before the last, it will make:
The Ship Simulator Website (http://www.shipsim.com)

I don't really understand Fred..Could you change the link in my post to here ?
There are no brackets as far as I can see..
-
here (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.oilpubs.com/pictures/oilpubs/articles/2/jumbo%2520%2520-%2520picture%2520of%2520similar%2520vessel.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.oilpubs.com/oso/article.asp%3Fv1%3D4960&usg=__nenvc4ifUdOwZeU3QwH1WghFaGI=&h=138&w=200&sz=9&hl=en&start=8&tbnid=0-OaiUPs_rL1NM:&tbnh=72&tbnw=104&prev=/images%3Fq%3Djumbo%2Bjavelin%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D21%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN)
-
How did you do that..?
-
Hi Salty..
With brackets, I mean "[" and "]"
But if I write the tags without spaces, it will not show up in plain written text,.. So I have to put in these spaces in the example, or you cannot see the code, in my post.
So you just type [ url='your link']'here'
But without the spaces in the tags.. the tags being the url bits in between the brackets, they need to be removed to make the code work.
('your link' is the site adress to be linked to, 'here' is the blue text, whatever you want it to be.)
The code will only make the blue word visible, and that will become the link to the site adress you entered as the 'your link' bit.
Does that clear it up?

Thanks Fred (it's all Chinese to me) I'll have a good look at it tomorrow.. ;)
-
No problem!! :D
-
So, to keep it simple, in the above given link: what exactly do I remove, and where do I type "here"
Be very specific.. ;)
-
I hope Fred doesn't mind me coming in :)
This is the link to the SS site, your first was to long :P
Ship Simulator
Ship Simulator (http://www.shipsim.com)
So you go:
[url=
Then your link:
www.shipsim.com]
Notice the other bracket so it sort of closes the link as such.
Then you put:

To say its finished.
Then add them together with no spaces in between :)
Ship Sim
-
Exactly my point, Where do these urls and brackets come from.? They aren't in my link..
-
Do you mean on the keyboard?
-
No, I mean in the link..http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.oilpubs.com/pictures/oilpubs/articles/2/jumbo%2520%2520-%2520picture%2520of%2520similar%2520vessel.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.oilpubs.com/oso/article.asp%3Fv1%3D4960&usg=__nenvc4ifUdOwZeU3QwH1WghFaGI=&h=138&w=200&sz=9&hl=en&start=8&tbnid=0-OaiUPs_rL1NM:&tbnh=72&tbnw=104&prev=/images%3Fq%3Djumbo%2Bjavelin%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D21%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN

Ah ok:
I beleive the brackets are there so the forum knows you want to make a link instead of a word.
So you start it off with a [ then url=then your link :)
When you close it you have a bracket [ then a slash / [/ then url and to finish off another bracket. ]
-
So I type those in myself ? The url and the brackets..?
-
Yeah :)
Just paste the link itself ;)
-
Yep... you yourself have to add the code, Saltydog, to turn the link you have, into a clickable word.
So it requires that input from you. You just type in the first bit, up to the "=", then you paste in your link, then you type in the last bit to complete the code string.
Or, you have your link first, and you type the rest in front of it, and behind it.
(Btw, of course I do not mind, SA.. and had I thought of the quoting, all that talk of spaces was not necessary, hehe, so thanks!)

Hey, I got it..! ;D thanks again..

Pleasure :)
-
Hehe..no problem.. and once you have typed it once, and seen it working, you'll get it right away, no doubt, it looks more complicated than it actually is, perhaps. ;D
