Title: Javelin Controls
Post by: Pilot of the Sea on January 06, 2009, 18:01:39
Hi All.

What is the purpose of the Javelin's Azimuth (Or Azimuz, however you spell it!  ;))?

I heard that it was a thruster, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

It's an Azipod/Azimuth, same as on the Bugsier 2 and Ocean Star.

In real life it's used for the dynamic position (DP2) system for controlling the vessel.

It's really hard to use because I haven't learned how to use the dang thing, anyway.

Does it actually control the ShipSim ship?

Yes you can use it. I believe it's positioned 1/3 (or more) from the stern. See it as a joystick, you can move it 360 degrees and the more you push the stick the more trottle it gives. It doenst have effect when the ships speed is too high (same as the bowthruster), so you'll only notice when the ship is stopped or at a very low speed. Once you get the hang of it, you can get the vessel anywhere you like in combination witht the bowthruster and the 2 main engines.

When you hold the mouse cursor on it, you see 3 different rings. Whe you move the inner ring (blue one) you change the direction, when you move the red and green ring you will set the trottle.

Thanks. That'll help with the Bugsier. I'm in the middle of a mission involving both....

Good description, Ballast,
I’d emphasize that it has low power compared to the drives on OS or B2, and can’t be used for underway propulsion—in fact it is retracted into the hull while underway.
Its contribution to ROT is much less than that of the bow thruster—this allows her to move crabwise slowly when balanced with the bow thruster.

On my laptop, sidestepping with the JJ is faster, then sidestepping with the Sherpa. She has de tendency to walk forward, but that's easy to solve with adjusting the direction of the azipod a little bit.

Javelins asipod is a retractable thruster, located aft, between her two rudders (in real life).

A lot of ships has this feature and its is used for manouvering in port or DP operations. As mentioned above, it will be hoisted during sea voyages.

I need to pratice more with that pod.  Maybe I'll do it tonight in free roam.

Is that really relevant to this topic?

Yes, because I haven't learned to use that pod.

No, until you edited your post, it said "I need to Practice more with the Jumbo Javelin. Maybe i'll do it tonight in free roam", which wasn't as relevant as it is now.

Retractable AZ drives are not “Azipods” for an obvious reason. Usually they are driven by a vertically-mounted electric motor that either retracts inside the trunk, or is fixed and drives the AZ through a spline shaft.

Here is one manufacturer of such drives—chosen for the pretty pictures.

Javelin has a Wartsila  FS225-240/MNR rated at 1700 KW

I did a little test with Jumbo Javelin in the Solent last night in free roam, and have finally learned how to use that pod.  Geez, if only I knew, it would have been a great help in some of the JJ missions.

It is not a "pod".

Okay, a Azipod.  Is that better?

No. It is not an Azipod. An Azipod is a specific tyype of drive with the electric motor mounted in a large pod behind the propeller. That design does not lend itself to retractability, obviously.
