for unknown reasons, I accidently clicked the "remove topic" button on that thread. Guys I AM REALLY SORRY about your posts going! I don't know, but maybe this forum needs a confirmation message while removing posts.
here is the ship sim wiki: www.shipsimulator.wikia.com
-
Uhm.. it does show confirmation messages.. at least for me.. but I reckon that's not just a moderator thing. That should work for everyone.
You can check by posting and then removing it.. I'd be interested to know if that is true or not.. let me know if you will.
-
ok Il start a post called test and delete it. everyone ignore it - k?
*edit
it does work, but it didnt give me a confirmation mesage when deleting that post :( I thought I hadn't deleted it but when I refreshed it it said it didn't exist or it was off-limits to me.
-
Hmm.. I just made a new account as a test, and tried it without mod rights in both IE and firefox, and there is a warning, for sure.
What browswer are you using? (not that I think it matters, it's coded into the SMF software AFAIK).
:-\
-
IE, but I surely didnt get a confirmation message, so I thought I hadnt deleted it. but it then said it was off-limits or non existant when I posted it.
-
Oh great ::)
5 Pages worth of posts destroyed...
-
here are my banners AGAIN
-
My post in that now destroyed thread was that you (Gloat) need to be very aware that as the publisher of the site, you are personally responsible if anyone else places copyrighted (plagiarised) materials on it.
There are teams of lawyers who roam the internet looking for such things, I know. I have a team who work for my organisation, looking for sites that have stolen my materials. They win enough cases to more than cover their costs (quite a good profit margin, actually).
-
ash, were those sherpa pictures yours of someone elses?
-
they were on the fairmount website but they had not big copyright sign on it so i presumed that they werent copyrighted
-
EVERYTHING that someone posts or publishes somewhere is copyrighted material. (presuming they made it themselves)
Just FYI
-
oh didnt know that sorry gloat
-
Fred is entirely correct.
There is absolutely no need for the owner to post a copyright statement on it. The copyright exists as soon as the "thing" exists, be it images, text or whatever.
-
Let's not forget that if you convert an image file to a text (.txt) file, you can see the copyright info.
-
ok ok.
Entirely your own pictures and nothing else.
My mission editor works ;D I can helpposting pictures now ;)
-
I set the images I use from somewhere else, with permission (such as a VSTEP render, that mark gave me permission to use a while ago as, "This file is copyrighted. It will be used in a way that qualifies as fair use under US copyright law."
-
...Which only work within the USA, of course. The copyright laws in other parts of the world may have subtle (or major) variations.
-
So if I asked for a picture of a navy frigate permission from you guys, even if it was alright, you couldn't do so.
Agent, could you please ask for a navy frigate pic, as I am not in the USA at this time.
-
I don't want to bother the admins. I could ask if I could use a screen shot from the teaser though.
-
Thants what I meant although ask them if we can use a pic from the navy firefighting game too, its pictures are better there.
-
Just because I am in the US doesn't mean their content is under US Copyright Laws...
You CAN ask for permission...
-
We have a page for SS Pro V2.0, so i think it should be ok having the Navy Frgiate. I'm also adding AI vessels soon enough.
-
I changed the wiki skin, looks better now.
-
It's the same for me. Sure you didn't just change it in your preferences not the site preferences?
-
I have now - check.
-
Liked the old one better...
-
really?
BTW I plan to make the following administrators:
Nathan C
AgentAustin
if you do not want, please say so here.
-
We need a page for the "Erik Raude"
Edit: I can get used to this, although there are some occurrences where white text is on a white background.

It has a site look here http://www.ocean-rig.com/default.asp?fid=1030

Thanks for the info.
It needs a Wiki Page though is what I meant ::)
Gloat, I just added a image to the Main Page, what do ya think?
-
Hey guys,
I see a lot of pieces of text that I assume are copy-pasted from some other source. Without permission and mentioning where it came from, that could be a bit of a copyright issue.
Also, some of the ship pages have some inaccuracies.. it's better to get facts, then to assume, words like 'apprearantly' and 'it seems' are not really the ones that you want to use too much in a factual article. And the word 'unknown' is present here and there too. A tip; when unsure, best not mention anything, since everything is known, if you get to the right source. And chances are you can be wrong.. ;)
Assumptions about SS10 and so on, are not wise.. It'll only mean you have to re-write most of it in time..
Personal ideas and beliefs about what's going to happen don't belong in such articles, not if you really want to make a reliable wiki, at least. ;)

Agreed, there was no statement released the Ocean Star was based off of a Carnival Vessel.
-
I can assure you that the text in the pages by me, are 100% my work.
A|A, the Pride of Rotterdam page from your Wiki site has exactly the same text as the Real Wikipedia page, and i do believe the real image of the ship has been used without permission....

Even if your wiki does not do anything, you still own it - and if that pride of rotterdam page is discovered, you will still be liable for the fines that follow.

Hi Fred. If you notice any untrue information, you can edit it - this is what wikis are for. Anyone can edit anything. And if you can tell me anything about the pages you think have copyrighted material inside, please let me know the titles of them immidiatly. I put this on the wikia rules as a very important rule and that banned the user which broke it banned for a month, I added copyright information to the main page (BTW I like the new banner AA) and still people think copy/pasting information which is not theirs is completely normal. If you give me the names of those articles and perhaps the user which posted it, I can do something about these fools.
-
Well if you're cool with that, I might edit a few things when I look at them again..
Mind you, some of the stuff that you've written is just simply not really true or are irrelevant thoughts and assumptions about certain features, so that might include me editing out complete sections, if it's based on wrong ideas or can be misguiding towards readers that have no knowledge of shipsim.
And if you look carefully, you can probably spot some stuff that is copied.. it simply is vstep's vessel info, or that of the company that owns it, mostly..
Just as a tip; try not to write these articles from what YOU think is going on or about how YOU think it is.. try to find source material, vstep info, the real life company's info, and just re-write things in your own words, but only base it on what you know to be true, and can prove. Otherwise some of the assumptions and ideas I read, might lead to people being misinformed if they read this wiki, and they could complain about certain things not being so, on the forum, once they have bought the game.
It needs to be informing, and it needs to be factual. Sure it can be a bit more casual that an official developers wiki perhaps, but for everything you write down, you should be sure that it is so, and have some source to prove it is so.
That way, no one can ever say "but it said so-and-so on the wiki!!" (And you probably know how much people value wikis, even though they cannot always be trusted 100%)
I'll go through some of the pages lateron tonight, I have other 'duties' first now.. :)
Fred
-
Gloat, I'll run to mexico if they come after me...
-
meet me in Tortuga.
Would you want to become an admin Austin? I would be happy to promote you
-
Well, I allso changed a few small mistakes.
And there are still e few ships missing.
Like:
Bugsier II
classic yacht
Marbella Delight
Herkules Atlas
Igor K.
Allso, there isn't a picture from the inland containership, while there is a topic for that ship.
And I ask myself if all the information is 100% correct.
But in general, the wiki looks ok.
-
I see a picture for the Inland Container Ship ???
http://shipsimulator.wikia.com/wiki/Image:SchiffSim2006_2009-01-04_00-53-10.jpg
-
Marbella Delight and Igor K are in the wiki, but are not on the main page, I will go add that now.
We still need a page for Erik Raude.
Gloat, sure.
Edit: I am also going to put the ships in alphabetic order on the main page.
Edit: Isn't the boat name North Star, it was a typo of "Northern Star"?
-
Sam, that image was taken by me, In SS2006.
I have another image too.
-
I have finally added my shot of Red Jet 4
-
I cant seem to upload the logo I designed. I checked the upload:logo page for admins and it had NO USEFUL INFORMATION whatsoever. I have uploaded the logo the way it told me too, but it doesnt tell me how to put the logo ON THE SITE.
-
Edit: Isn't the boat name North Star, it was a typo of "Northern Star"?
Hi Austin,
Well, apart from the actual name sign on the boat, that says "North Star", everywhere else, in the editor, and all the documentation, it's referred to as "Northern Star".
So I think it's best to stick to "Northern Star", as that's how it is called everywhere in the game ,the editor and in the manuals and such.

Ok.
-
Were you just editing 'walkabout'? It changed before my eyes.. and I was editing it too. ;D
-
Nope I am in class right now.
-
Ah okay. Someone else then, perhaps.. ;D
@Gloat:
I really think you should leave certain bits of info and trivia out, unless you have written proof of these facts being.. well.. actual facts.. I am discovering many mistakes and wrongly assumed ideas in a lot of the pages, now that I go through most of it.. some things are just pulled out of thin air.. since I know them to be completely false.... I'm not trying to be a spoil-sport, but we wouldn't want the people to get misinformed, right? Just here to help.
I'll correct some stuff.. but to prevent that being necessary too much, try to write about facts alone. No use in some fun trivia, if they are a fabrication, right?
Fred
-
I have gone through the pages you guys have made so far and have removed some inaccuracies and re-written certain bits where necessary, to include facts, and exclude fiction. ;)
Regards,
Fred
-
Cool thanks fred.
-
No problem!
-
Just went though all the pages again fixed spelling mistakes. ;D
-
Heh.. I didn't do spelling.. I only did the fact and fiction bits.. I thought the typos added character.. ::)
:P
-
Thanks all
-
You're welcome, Gloat!
-
Sam, that image was taken by me, In SS2006.
I have another image too.
I know that ship.
That is the inland ship from ss06, but that isn't the inland containership, don't you remember the inland containership?
-
I think we are still missing Arie Visser, P90 and Pioneer
-
P90?
-
(http://world.guns.ru/smg/fn_p90_1.jpg)
P90...
;D ???
-
That's not what I had in mind. :o
Sorry, I meant P6.
Anyway, I am writing up The Solent.
-
P90 is my favorite sub-machine gun.
I have 2 airsoft guns of it. :P
-
I have done The Solent, just need to go around in a boat in nice weather top get some in-game pictures - currently it is too foggy!
http://shipsimulator.wikia.com/wiki/The_Solent
-
Added a picture to the Solent page.
-
You have probably seen the infoboxes I added. They will be getting an update later.
-
Would Titanic's departure point be considered a sight in Southampton?
-
Would Titanic's departure point be considered a sight in Southampton?
It would be, but there isn't anything to actually see, just a quayside which normally has a freight ship moored alongside - same with the QE2 berth, there isn't any7thing there either.
-
true ;)
-
Gentlemen, we have ourselves an unregistered troll.
http://shipsimulator.wikia.com/wiki/Ship_simulator_2008 (http://shipsimulator.wikia.com/wiki/Ship_simulator_2008)
Also, this is the first post in this topic in just shy of a year ;)
I propose we also start cracking down on that SSE article. It is in desparate need of an update!

Well your in luck im updating it as we speak!
-
MMMMMM, you should work on how you type before trying to create pieces of writing as neutral as wiki articles ;)
-
What you mean?
-
Use only statements and only third person views. Also, placing your name on the bottom of a page like that makes you look narcissistic as well as pretentious.
Don't worry, I'm doing some clean up work as we speak to get it more into the desired tone ;)
-
Heyy! That took me like half an hour to type you removed it all
-
It took me quite a while to make sure grammar and spelling were correct as well as to keep the neutral tone of the whole wiki intact with a single tone.
