Title: The Story behind the Queen Mary
Post by: Gloat on December 29, 2008, 19:46:22
Today the vessel is honoured - Cunard wanted to name the ship after the greatest queen on earth - queen Victoria. They needed permission from the Monarchy to name it after a royal.

So off goes cunard to King George V, monarch at the time of QM, and Cunard says: "Sire We want to name our greatest queen in England. Queen Vic..."

King George interuppts:
"But thats WONDERFUL news! My wife will be so exited about a ship named after her!"

Cunard says:
"We meant Queen Victoria, Sire."

King George:
"You said you wanted to name the ship after the greatest queen in English history - and thats obviously my wife, Mary."

How many of you knew that? the above is actually true - QM was actually to become the QV!

Well, it's a well known legend I think, but as far as I know, no one knows if it's really the truth, there are a few other explainations too, out there.

But it's a good story, nonetheless, and might well be true indeed...  ;D

Yeah I already knew that. It would of actually make sense to have called it Queen Victoria, with it ending in the -ia prefix like cunards other ships ie. Aquitania, Lusitania, Mauretania, Berengaria etc.
