Title: [Video] Quick Departure - Pride of Rotterdam
Post by: Cloud on July 21, 2007, 07:37:29
Just a short video of a rather aggressive maneuver pivoting on the stern to get out of the Rotterdam Terminal quick with the Pride of Rotterdam.

Here's the Link;

Hi RS,

Great try for your second time!  ;) ...To pivot on the stern without making contact with the jetty on your port quarter leave your main engines stopped during the initial turn. As you come around it may be necessary to come astern slightly on the Stbd main. Once you are perpendicular to the opposite side you should be clear and can really split your sticks!    :D

Cheers,

Larse

That's the spirit!!  ;) Look forward to your video.

ps - your video is very smooth, mine is a little choppy. What video screen capture software did you use?

I'm using Fraps 2.8.0 and btw... it's hard to beat your departure but I'll try :P

Super! thanks for that, I'll look into Fraps.

Just found a couple time lapse video of the Pride of Rotterdam leaving Hull on youtube. The berth is almost identical in layout however she doesn't have to make a full tight turn to get out into the channel. Take a look, a somewhat similar pivot maneuver is being used.

Call it "The PRIDE's Race"??? I'm not sure, but it's not usual to hurry that way with a regular night ferry. And I believe, the vessel will not turn right infront of the berth, but leaving sideways to swing around just half a mile behind the terminal and - if necessary - that would be faster at all!

Regards

Hi Bottman,

That's great!!

The Pride's races
:D I have to say though, the ferry and pax ship culture especially is definitely always a race against time...  ;)

I'd be curious to see what they actually do at this berth in Rotterdam. Any of our Dutch friends know???

In '96 I was sailing on a nice "small" pax ship, the Royal Majesty out of Miami. We use to dock at terminal 7(E now) and since all the pax ships departed between 1700-1830 causing congestion in the port, we were short enough (before NCL lengthened her) to just crack the stern open and pivot right in front of the berth, weather permitting of course. (i attached an old aerial photo you can see what i mean, the basin is in the lower left of the picture).

This would allow us to avoid going down to the turning basin at the end of Dodge Island and get out first so as not to deal with waiting for the Bigger Ships.

Cheers,

Larse

Cool Redbeard!

Can't wait to see some of your vids!  :)

Indeed you are absolutely right that is the Norway, ex-France. They just don't make them like they use to.  ;) Everything built today is a tin can by her standard. What a tremendous hull form!!!  :o

Hi Cloud!  ;D
Ihave just come home from a tour at the town pubs. Old, well stored single malt!  ;) My best friend had his birthday...

Anyways.... I havent downloaded fraps yet, and dont get your hopes up to high. hehe.. Im not a proffetional captain, only got the D5L sertifficate. hehe.. But I'll make a video as soon as I get the download.  :)

The S/S Norway is one of the most beautiful ships I have ever seen. Its really too bad theey have scraped her.  :'( She had the most beautyful lines i have ever seen on a cruise liner. A fantastic, narrow, sharp-edged, streamlined hull.
Im my opinion, a beautyful classic lady!

I almost cried when I saw this movie.

Hi Redbeard,

Thanks for the vid on the Norway. Man....that's sad! It's incredible how such a grand vessel suffers such a miserable ends. What was particularly moving for me was seeing the various pictures of crew left behind there on the bulkheads.  :-\

Hi Agent,

Nice clip! Good Stuff! That a pretty strong mooring line that's holding you back with both mains going full ahead  ;D

The explosion on the Norway happened in 2003. Basically it was a boiler explosion. I found this NTSB Advisory that gives more detail; http://www.ntsb.gov/Pressrel/2003/030609a.htm (http://www.ntsb.gov/Pressrel/2003/030609a.htm)

Thnx m8, but the file size was 3,5GB so it would be to big. hehe... I downloaded Virtualdub, it worked i think. Got it compressed to 65MB, its not the best quality. But you can see the maneuver at least. hehe..  ;D

How do you make the introes? Just like the other vidioes here...
Title: Re: [Video] Quick Departure - Pride of Rotterdam
Post by: Cloud on July 24, 2007, 03:05:59
Well, I used windows movie maker, it's under Start/Programs/Accessories.

Import your video into this program and you can insert a beginning, ending, effects, music, whatever you want. It's pretty intuitive so I'm sure you'll get the hang of it immediately.  The intros is the "make title and credits" under step 2. Have fun with it.  ;)

I'm still having problems capturing smooth video....don't know why exactly that is...maybe just time for a faster machine....  :-\

redbeard, nice video! 8)

This is actually pretty fun but it takes a lot of time (and a fast computer) to make a great video.

Hehe.. Thanks RS!  :)

I usually make ads for magazines and newspapers, but i have never done anything with  live pictures... I dont have mowiemaker, but as I think of it, I have the entire Adobe CS2 package. So I must have an other program to edit it. hehe...

Cloud: Have you tryed http://www.fraps.com/ (http://www.fraps.com/)?
Its actually quite simple. But it costs 34$. You can adjust the framerate (FPS) you want to record with. Offcourse you will never get better framerete the you are running the simulator with. It could also have something to do with graphics card and memmory. I dont know what system you are running SS08 on..

/cheers  ;D

EDIT: Type error  :P

Hey Redbeard,

No I havent' tried the Fraps yet, just some freewares. Maybe I need to try it and see if it's better. You know my machine is about 3 years old now...in fact i'm can't even recall what's in it it's been so long since i've messed around with it. I think it's got 512k ram and a Geforce 6800 card with 128m memory....something like that anyway......I'm hopeless!!!!   :D

For the moment I'll resort to pictures. I put some pics of a med moor on the site for now....the anchors actually worked quite well!!! ;D

Cheers,

Larse
